THIS EDITION IS DEDICATED TO THE

LOVING MEMORY OF Colleen Barret

oday, LUV is in the Air and in the 4th

Edition of Foxtrot Delta Magazine!

Greetings from the city that never

sleeps, New York!

As we climb to new heights with the fourth edition

of Foxtrot Delta Magazine, we bring you a blend of

inspiration and the unmistakable energy of New York

City.

This edition is dedicated to the extraordinary Operational

Control People who keep US aviation turning smoothly.

This time, we have something special: LUV is not just a

feeling but a feature! Indeed, in this edition, we spotlight

Southwest Airlines’ NOC teams. May 2024 marks the

10th anniversary Southwest Airlines has operated out

of their industry-leading NOC, and we are thrilled to

celebrate by sharing the stories of the remarkable people

who keep their operation flying high.

As the editor, I am particularly proud to feature Southwest

Airlines in this edition because of the profound influence

of two of its legendary leaders: Herb Kelleher and

Colleen Barrett. Studying their innovative and people-

focused leadership styles during my time at City

University of London profoundly shaped my own career

in aviation management. Their commitment to fostering

a culture of LUV, efÏciency, and employee empowerment

revolutionized the airline industry and inspired me to

prioritize these values in my professional journey. Their

legacy continues to guide and motivate many aviation

professionals and me, making this feature a heartfelt

tribute to their enduring impact.

Prepare to be inspired by the NOC teams at Southwest

Airlines, who navigate the complexities of operational

control with precision and a touch of humor. Their

dedication to excellence has been a cornerstone of

Southwest’s success, and their stories are a testament

to the power of teamwork and passion.

So fasten your seatbelts and get ready for an uplifting

journey through the world of US aviation operations.

Whether you are a seasoned pro or just curious about

the magic behind the scenes, this edition promises to

elevate your spirits and perhaps even make you chuckle

along the way.

Welcome aboard the 4th edition of Foxtrot Delta

Magazine.

INTERFERENCE OF

GLOBAL NAVIGATION

SATELLITE SYSTEM (GNSS)

Stockholmradio (STORADIO) has provided the

airlines with a reliable, stable and 247/365 air to

ground HF service since 1968. It all started as a

project between Scandinavian Airlines System, SAS

and the Swedish telecom company Televerket (now

Telia.) The project grew and throughout the years our

OCC has connected thousands of calls from flight

deck to ground and vice versa. Stockholmradio still

has approx. 250 airlines using our HF radio service

and this year it has been a boom with airlines signing

up. The experts that said that airline HF was dead

years ago, were proven wrong and the service and

system are still very reliable and well maintained.

And Stockholmradio is one of the few operators left

on the market that knows how to handle and provide

the services.

With the widespread usage and high reliance of

GNSS, also comes vulnerability to outages due

to interference, jamming and spoofing. These

vulnerabilities have increased lately and many of

our customers are concerned about this negative

development. Also, with the increased world tension

due to wars and “hostile countries”, the discussions

how to maintain a safe and secure air to ground

communication has come to light again. Many OCC

controllers and pilots are not familiar how the HF

works (even though most aircraft are equipped with

HF antennas and that OCC staff have limited basic

knowledge) and we see a trend that more airlines

are reaching out to us, regarding how to use the

HF. On our webpage we have a lot of information,

and our 247 OCC can always support other OCC

staff and pilots of how to handle the HF in a more

professional way.

The list of negative effects is long, and the consequences are very

dangerous and can jeopardize the safety and security of a flight. Here are

some points, but the list is longer:

Jamming is an intentional radio

frequency interference (RFI) with

GNSS

signals.

This

prevents

receivers from locking onto satellites

signals and has the main effect

of rendering the GNSS system

ineffective or degraded for users in

the jammed area.

Spoofing

involves

broadcasting

counterfeit

satellite

signals

to

deceive GNSS receivers, causing

them to compute incorrect position,

navigation, and timing data.

What is

jamming and

spoofing?

AND WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF

JAMMING AND SPOOFING?

Unavailability of GNSS

navigation

False warnings

(e.g. PULL UP alerts

during cruise).

Unavailability of INS.

Sometimes the false signal

is of sufÏcient strength

and integrity so as to fool

the aircraft systems.

Aircraft shown at wrong

position.This may evolve in

a false loss of separation/

airspace infringement

warning, or an actual event

not being detected.

Inability to use GNSS

arrival and approach

procedures.

Degradation of time-

dependent systems,

such as clock, fuel

computation system, FMS.

Lost radio

communication between

flight deck and ground.

Route deviations or

uncommented turns.
