IFOA Foxtrot Delta Magazine Ed 4- Southwest Airlines NOC

INTERFERENCE OF

GLOBAL NAVIGATION

SATELLITE SYSTEM (GNSS)

Stockholmradio (STORADIO) has provided the

airlines with a reliable, stable and 247/365 air to

ground HF service since 1968. It all started as a

project between Scandinavian Airlines System, SAS

and the Swedish telecom company Televerket (now

Telia.) The project grew and throughout the years our

OCC has connected thousands of calls from flight

deck to ground and vice versa. Stockholmradio still

has approx. 250 airlines using our HF radio service

and this year it has been a boom with airlines signing

up. The experts that said that airline HF was dead

years ago, were proven wrong and the service and

system are still very reliable and well maintained.

And Stockholmradio is one of the few operators left

on the market that knows how to handle and provide

the services.

With the widespread usage and high reliance of

GNSS, also comes vulnerability to outages due

to interference, jamming and spoofing. These

vulnerabilities have increased lately and many of

our customers are concerned about this negative

development. Also, with the increased world tension

due to wars and “hostile countries”, the discussions

how to maintain a safe and secure air to ground

communication has come to light again. Many OCC

controllers and pilots are not familiar how the HF

works (even though most aircraft are equipped with

HF antennas and that OCC staff have limited basic

knowledge) and we see a trend that more airlines

are reaching out to us, regarding how to use the

HF. On our webpage we have a lot of information,

and our 247 OCC can always support other OCC

staff and pilots of how to handle the HF in a more

professional way.
