4- VISIONS - Expected, preferred and alternative futures (06-09 years)

Welcome to interactive presentation, created with Publuu. Enjoy the reading!

ENVISIONING SUSTAINABLE

FUTURES

VISIONS

Imagine you are going on a trip with your family.

There are three diferent ways your trip could go:

The frst way is what you think will probably happen,

based on what you know about your trip and the

place you're going. This is called the "expected" way.

The second way is what you would really like to

happen. It's like having a wish for how your trip

could be. This is called the "preferred" way.

The third way is diferent from the frst two. It's a way

that you might not expect, but it's still possible. It's

like having a backup plan in case things don't go the

way you expect or the way you want. This is called

an "alternative" way.

EXPECTED,

PREFERRED AND

ALTERNATIVE

FUTURES

“TNC DEVELOPED TWO SCENARIOS FOR THE FUTURE: ONE WAS BUSINESS AS USUAL, AND THE

OTHER WAS A CONSERVATION PATHWAY. WE LEARNED THAT BY 2050 WE CAN SUPPORT BOTH

CONSERVATION AND ECONOMIC GROWTH.”

TWO PATHS TO 2050

Thinking about these diferent ways helps you and your family plan for your trip and make the

most of it, even if things don't go exactly as you expected or wanted. The same idea applies to

thinking about the future and planning for a more sustainable world. We can think about what we

expect to happen, what we would like to happen, and what else could happen, so that we can

make good choices and take actions to help create a better future for everyone.

We can create a world where people can

live happily and where nature is healthy

too. New research shows it's possible! But

to make it happen, we need to change the

way we get our food, water, and energy. A

study called "An Attainable Global Vision

for Conservation and Human Well-Being"

talks about how we can make this happen.

It talks about 10 important things we need

to do (called Sustainable Development

Goals) to make sure the world is healthy for

people and nature. This way, we can make

sure everyone is happy and healthy in the

future!

A SUSTAINABLE

FUTURE IS POSSIBLE

Sometimes we want to make things better for ourselves and for

the planet we live on. But there are diferent ways to do it,

depending on how long we want to wait to see results.

Short-term ways are things we can do quickly to make a diference

right away. For example, picking up trash on the ground to keep

our neighborhood clean.

Medium-term ways take a little longer, maybe a few years, but

they try to make bigger changes that will last longer. For example,

using less energy in our homes by turning of lights when we

leave a room or using less water when we brush our teeth.

Long-term ways take even longer, maybe decades or more, but

they try to make really big changes that will help not just us but

also people in the future. For example, using more renewable

energy like solar and wind power instead of fossil fuels like oil and

gas.

All of these ways are important and we can use them together to

make things better for ourselves and for the planet we live on!

DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO SUSTAINABILITY:

SHORT, MEDIUM AND LONG TERM

“Sustainable innovation is when a company makes changes to the things they sell or the way they make

them. These changes make the world a better place by helping people and not hurting the environment.

Even though they make these changes, they can still make money and be successful as a business. A smart

person named Richard Adams studied this and found out how it works.”

WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION?

Scenario development is like imagining diferent stories that might happen in the

future. We can use things that happened in the past and things that are happening now

to help us guess what might happen next. It's kind of like trying to guess what will

happen in a book before you fnish reading it. We can use scenario development to help

us plan for diferent things that might happen in the future and fgure out what we

should do to get ready.

Scenarios can help us think about what the future might

be like and make plans to create a good future. Just like

we use maps to fnd our way to a new place, scenarios

can help us fgure out how to get to a better future. It's

like having a special tool that helps us make good

choices.

SCENARIO DEVELOPMENT

SCENARIOS CAN INFORM DECISION

MAKING

EFFECTS CAUSED BY HUMANS

PLAY A MAJOR ROLE WHEN

MAPPING ALTERNATIVE

AND PREFERRED FUTURE

SCENARIOS.

When we talk about what the world will

be like in the future, we need to think

about the things that people do that

can change how the world looks. For

example, if we cut down a lot of trees or

pollute the air, it can make the world

look diferent in the future. So, when we

try to imagine what the future will be

like, we need to think about how people

can make the world a better place by

doing things that don't hurt the planet,

like using clean energy and recycling.

THE IMPACT AND UNPREDICTABILITY

OF HUMAN ACTIONS ON THE ENVIRONMENT

Human actions can sometimes have a big efect on the world around us. We might do something that we

think is good, but it can have unexpected, uncertain, and complicated results. It's like when we build a

sandcastle on the beach - we might make a big pile of sand that we think is really cool, but it could change

the way the waves come in and out, and afect other things on the beach that we didn't think about. That's

why we have to be careful and think about what we do, so we don't accidentally cause problems for

ourselves and other living things.

HOW HUMANS DISRUPTED A

CYCLE ESSENTIAL TO ALL

LIFE

"How one animal dug up carbon and put it back

into the atmosphere at an astounding pace."

HUMANS INDUCE AND REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTERS

COMPLEX SOCIOECOLOGICAL PROBLEMS REQUIRE NOT ONE

BUT MANY SOLUTIONS

In the last ffty years, there have been many big problems that have happened in nature, like big fres, foods,

and pollution. But because of these problems, smart people have worked hard to fnd new ways to help

protect nature and prevent more problems from happening. This is a book that talks about what happened

before, and how we can make things better in the future!

Adapted from National Geographic.

Sometimes, things can be really complicated, like a

big puzzle with lots of pieces. And when we try to

solve those complicated things, we have to think

about many diferent things, like how people feel

and what the environment is like.

It's kind of like when you have a problem at school

and you have to think about what you can do to

solve it. Maybe one thing will work for one problem,

but not for another. That's because every problem is

diferent and needs its own special solution.

So, just like how you have to think about diferent

ways to solve problems at school, we also have to

think about diferent ways to solve big problems

that afect lots of people and the environment.

When humans change the natural

environment by cutting down trees,

building cities, and polluting the air and

water, it can cause problems for plants,

animals, and people. Some of the

problems that can happen are that it can

make the climate change, which can

cause things like foods and storms, and

it can also make it hard for animals to fnd

food and places to live. It's important for

us to take care of the environment by

using less energy, recycling, and planting

trees so that we can keep everything

healthy and happy!

INTRODUCTION TO

ENVIRONMENTAL

PUBLIC HEALTH TRACKING

HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT

There is a connection between the environment and

the health of individuals and communities.

Likewise, people can afect the health of the environ-

ment.

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH IS THE DISCIPLINE

THAT…

Focuses on the inter-relationships between people and

their environment,

Promotes human health and well-being, and

Fosters a safe and healthful environment.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS

WHAT ARE ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH HAZARDS?

An environmental health hazard is a substance that has

the ability to cause an adverse health event.

This includes physical, chemical, and biological factors

that are external to a person.

Hazards can be natural or human-made.

EXAMPLES OF ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS

INCLUDE:

* Air contaminants

* Toxic waste

* Radiation

* Disease-causing microorganisms and plants

* Pesticides

* Heavy metals

* Chemicals in consumer products

* Extreme temperatures and weather events

The most common environmental health hazards are

air and water pollution."

THE RISKS OF

HUMAN IMPACT

ON NATURAL

ENVIRONMENT

SOME LIFESTYLES HAVE A

PROFOUND AND NEGATIVE

IMPACT ON SUSTAINABILITY

Nature is all the plants, animals, and other living

things that live on Earth. It's important that we

take care of nature because it helps us breathe,

provides us with food, and makes our planet

beautiful.

But sometimes, the things we do can hurt nature.

For example, when we use too much water or

throw garbage on the ground, it can hurt the

plants and animals around us. And when we cut

down too many trees, it can hurt the animals that

live in them.

So, we need to learn how to live in a way that

doesn't

hurt

nature. This

is

called

being

sustainable. We can do things like turning of lights

when we leave a room, using less water when we

brush our teeth, and throwing our garbage in the

trash can instead of on the ground. These little

things can make a big diference in keeping our

planet healthy and happy.

Why beef is the worst food for

the climate!

"Avoiding high-emission foods can have a

bigger climate impact than any other

consumption change."

EVERYDAY

SUSTAINABLE

LIVING

SWAPS

The UnSchool team made a list of things that

people can do every day to help take care of the

planet. They worked with a group called UNEP to

make this list. It's called the Anatomy of Action!

They looked at lots of diferent ideas and chose 10

that are really easy and can make a big diference.

If lots of people do these 10 things, we can help

make the world a better place for us and for all the

animals and plants too!

LINKING GLOBAL IMPACTS

AND SUSTAINABILITY

Local impacts refer to the things that happen in the places around us, like our neighborhoods,

parks, and cities. Global sustainability means taking care of the Earth so that we can keep living

on it happily for a long time without hurting it.

The link between local impacts and global sustainability is important because the things we do

in our own neighborhoods can afect the whole Earth. For example, if we throw trash on the

ground instead of in a trash can, it can make the Earth dirty and hurt the animals that live there.

But if we all work together to pick up our trash and put it in the right place, we can help keep

the Earth clean and healthy for everyone.

WHY IS THE AMAZON RAINFOREST IMPORTANT ?

?

The Amazon rainforest is a big, important

forest in South America. It's really special

because it's home to lots of animals and

plants that we don't fnd anywhere else. The

trees in the Amazon help to keep the air and

water clean, and they store a lot of a gas

called carbon which helps to stop the Earth

from getting too hot. But some people are

cutting down the trees in the Amazon, and

this is causing big problems for the Earth. We

https://www.wwf.org.uk/who-we-are

need to help protect the Amazon so that it can keep doing its important job of helping us

and the planet stay healthy.

SOLVING SUSTAINABILITY PROBLEMS

THROUGH THE USE OF MULTIPLE

CULTURES AND DISCIPLINES

There are a lot of problems in the world, like the environment changing and making it hard for animals

and people to live. There are diferent ways to fx these problems, but we need to think about who we

are, where we live, and what we know to decide the best way to solve them. Some people have more

power to make decisions than others, and that can make things unfair. We need to listen to everyone's

ideas and try diferent ways to fx the problems, instead of just one way.

What are Pathways to SUSTAINABILITY?

Sustainability problems are big problems that afect our planet and everything that lives on it.

They include things like pollution, climate change, and using up resources faster than we can

replace them. These problems are so big that no one person or group can solve them alone.

That's why we need to work together and use lots of diferent ideas and ways of thinking to

come up with solutions. We need to listen to everyone's ideas, even if they are diferent from our

own, and work together to make changes that will help the planet be healthier and happier for

everyone.
