Bondi SBLSC continued its prominence as a powerhouse in lifesaving sports
this season. The 2023/24 season welcomed back many of our seasoned
veterans and also brought many new and old faces into the team. Our
athletes hit the ground running, demonstrating the well-developed lifesaving
skills of Bondi SBLSC. Individual training began early in the season with sessions
focused on the finer details of the PSAR manual, CPR technique and practice
racing with fins. Closer to the key competitions the Champion patrol teams
also began training their team CPR, rescue relays and scenarios.
The first test came at the Sydney Branch Championships where we stamped
our name in the medal tally of almost every category with seven (7) Gold, one
(1) Silver and three (3) Bronze medals. Bondi SBLSC topped the point score with
more than double the points of the closest Club. The momentum continued
on the road to a very competitive NSW State Championships where we walked
away with three (3) Gold and two (2) Bronze medals. Notable mentions go
to our Champion Lifesaver Gold medalists: John Wilcox (50+ Male), and Dan
Rosado (40-49 Male), and Bronze medalists: Oli Brisse (30-39 Male), and Kristy
McIntyre (40-49 Female). Our under 17 mixed patrol team (Jessie Ryan, Indigo
Parry-Husbands, Declan Fletcher and Sophia Byrnes) also came away with a
Gold medal.
The tireless coaching of Max Gonzalez and the support of Michael Hallam
prepared our qualified athletes well for their final challenge: The Australian
Championships. Oli Brisse, John Wilcox and our mighty U17 Patrol team flew
to the Sunshine Coast to face off against the greatest all-round lifesavers
Australia has to offer. The team performed incredibly well with Oli placing
fourth and John sixth in Champion Lifesaver, while our U17 patrol team fought
tooth and nail to come away in third place with a Bronze medal. We are
ecstatic with these great results and the future of the Champion Lifesaver
competition team. We sleep well at night knowing what brilliant lifesavers we
have protecting our beach across all ages. A special thank you must go out to
our officials and patients for making our participation possible.
