BUILDING
COMMITTEE
REPORT
The planning for the restoration of our historic Clubhouse and the
construction of a new building behind it has continued through
2023/24. The finished project will include equal male and female
change rooms, a basement for craft and equipment storage, offices,
youth and Club rooms, training and patrol operations rooms, a gym, a
kiosk and an improved function room with outdoor balcony terraces.
This transformation will set up Bondi SBLSC for generations of use and
provide income from the function room to underpin our running costs.
Waverley Council have been working with the lead consultant to
develop the concept design for our new Clubhouse. During this time
the Building Committee has provided the reviews and inputs needed to
make sure the operational requirements are considered and included.
There have been some challenges along the way as we look at
things in more detail, complete more investigations and understand
the changed environment around the Clubhouse since the Pavilion
opened. The Council is now preparing to engage an Early Contractor
Involvement (ECI) company to undertake the next phase of design,
planning and costing leading to the construction work. They will have
the design and construction expertise to evaluate and finalise the DA
approved design and use their past construction experience to advise
on methodology, programme and best use of appropriate materials to
provide a final construction cost for agreement.
I am joined on the Building Committee by James Allison, Dave Auckett,
Alexis Bell, Sharyn Brown, Rose McMahon and Patrick Moore. We have
also brought in additional support from Alex Porebski and Stephen
McKenzie as the Club Legal Officer with Michael Cooper also getting
more involved as we develop the contractual arrangements with
Council. Throughout the year I have attended the monthly Board of
Management meetings to discuss progress and agree on our position
as required. I’d like to thank Brent Jackson, Felicity MacArthur and
Thomas Wetula who joined us for Committee meetings and the Project
Control Group throughout the year where we discussed the project with
senior representatives from the Council.
We have successfully secured a $1m grant from the NSW Office of
Sport as part of their Surf Club Facility Program and have applied for
further grants to add to our existing funds and function room capital
contribution. With the Bondi Pavilion now completed and well-received
by the public, the Council is determined to have our Clubhouse
rejuvenation project carried out, to reflect the historical and design
elements that both significant buildings share.
