Artifacts of St Kilda

The purpose of this catalogue is to create

a faux narrative of the inhabitants’ customs

and lives on St Kilda. All artifacts, excluding

pottery and wooden utensils, have been

carefully handcrafted in studio time by

Kirsten Slater to replicate items thought to

be found on the island.

Fowling

The St Kilda community skillfully exploited

the seabird colonies that surrounded their

village. The men embarked on perilous

climbs to the cliffs of Boreray, Soay, and

the sea stacks, using ropes, rods, and snares

to harvest birds. Working in groups, they

targeted

fulmars,

gannets,

guillemots,

razorbills, and puffins. These birds were vital

to the islanders’ survival, providing meat, oil

and even serving as a form of currency. The

eggs collected were also a crucial part of

their diet, showcasing the resourcefulness

and bravery of the St Kilda people in their

harsh environment.
