The IAHS is proudly supported by our Association Partners
I’d like to start by wishing Lucy Taylor
all the best for the future and thank
her for her time as editor of this fine
publication. Lucy worked tirelessly to
keep Rude Health fresh and vibrant
over the years. Thankfully her shoes
will be filled by new editor Liz Parry
who has hit the ground running
with this July/August edition. Topics
including must-have minerals, the role of spices in overall
health and the importance of essential fatty acids are all
featured and reflective of what we are finding popular in
stores at the moment. Best of luck Liz. I’ll try not to stress
you out with deadline day submissions!
For Health Stores Ireland, June saw us gather in Cork
for our annual AGM, where a diverse group of like-minded
retailers were able to compare notes and discuss the ever-
evolving challenges faced by our industry. Our association
partners also joined us for the afternoon session which is
always appreciated. Without our quality wholesalers we’d
have empty shelves and no satisfied customers.
We are always looking at ways to better serve you, our
customers, by keeping up with the latest research and trends.
Health stores are often copied but never equalled. Where else
can you ask for a bottle of “euthanasia” and be understood
as looking for echinacea? Something which has happened to
many of us HSI members! Although that’s a funny interaction
to have, it illustrates how the ability to decipher what people
mean is essential in our industry. Asking questions in order to
get to the bottom of our customers’ issues is very important.
So don’t be shy when you are next seeking advice in your
local health store. We are here to help within the framework
of our industry-standard protocol.
In our last issue I spoke about the upcoming launch of
the new-look healthstores.ie website and I’m happy to say
it’s taken shape. So why not have a look after reading another
excellent issue of Rude Health magazine?.

Irish researchers have carried out a study which challenges
the “one-size-fits-all” approach to vitamin D supplementation
guidelines.
The team, from Trinity College Dublin’s School of Medicine,
analysed data from half a million participants in the UK. They
calculated each person’s ambient ultraviolet-B (UVB) level, which
is the wavelength of sunlight that induces vitamin D synthesis
in the skin. This revealed that ambient UVB is a critical predictor
of vitamin D status, even in a place like the UK, which receives
relatively little sunlight.
The researchers also discovered that age, sex, body mass
index (BMI), cholesterol level, and vitamin D supplementation
significantly influence how people respond to UVB. For example,
as BMI and age increase, the amount of vitamin D produced in
response to UVB decreases.
Professor Lina Zgaga, the report’s principal investigator, said:
“We believe our findings have significant implications for the
development of tailored recommendations for vitamin D
supplementation. Our study underscores the need to move away
from a one-size-fits-all approach towards personalised strategies
for optimizing vitamin D status.”
The study was published in the journal Clinical Nutrition.

B vitamins could
reduce impact of
age-related disease
New research from Dublin City University has revealed that
vitamin B12 and folate may help to cut the risk of age-
related diseases.
Pregnant women are advised to take folate, which is
vitamin B9, along with vitamin B12 to reduce the risk of
their baby developing neural tube defects, including spina
bifida. However, researchers from DCU have now found
that this combination can also help to reduce damage to
our DNA, and therefore reduce the impact and risk of
age-related diseases.
The research examined the mitochondria which produce
the energy that each of our cells needs. These structures
have their own DNA and, as we age, this gets damaged and
causes age-related diseases. However, if we are getting
optimal levels of vitamin B12 and folate, we can cut down
on this damage.
Green leafy vegetables are a source of folate, while
vitamin B12 is found in meat, fish, eggs, dairy products
and specially fortified foods.
€4 million invested
in women’s sport
Ireland’s Women in Sport Programme has received a
record investment of €4 million. The funding will go
towards a variety of projects and initiatives across a wide
range of sports.
These projects support the government’s vision for
women in sport as one where women have an equal
opportunity to achieve their full potential, while enjoying
a lifelong involvement in sport.
€1m of the funding is being ring-fenced for football,
Gaelic games and rugby. A proportion of the funding
will also go towards Her Outdoors Week, an annual
campaign which encourages more women and girls
to take part in outdoor physical activity. This year’s
campaign takes place from 12 to 18 August.
Nature time boosts
children’s mental health
Children who spend more time in natural environments
have significantly better mental health, according to new
research led by the University of Glasgow.
The innovative new study, which used GPS and
accelerometer tracking, found that the benefits of
spending time in nature were strongest for children from
lower-income households.
The study, which is published in the journal
Environment International, found that children who
spent just 60 minutes daily in nature had a 50% lower risk
of mental health issues.
Notably, the benefits
were greatest for children
from disadvantaged
backgrounds, particularly
in terms of improved
behaviour and social
skills. In addition, the
study found that using
natural environments for
light activities, such as
walking, was equally as
beneficial as using these
spaces for more vigorous
activities, such as running.

Low dairy intake
noted in Irish teens
Although 98% of Irish adolescents consume dairy,
a recent report from the Irish Universities Nutrition
Alliance (IUNA) has revealed that only 4% meet the
recommendations set out by the Department of
Health’s dietary guidelines.
On average, teenagers were found to consume
just under two servings of dairy per day. However, the
guidelines suggest five daily servings from the “milk,
yogurt and cheese” food group for those aged 9-18
years, due to higher calcium requirements during the
teenage years, with three servings recommended for
other age groups.
Lead researcher on the study, Dr Breige McNulty
from University College Dublin, said: “Consuming
enough calcium and vitamin D during the teenage years
is critical in helping our bodies to build strong bones
for life. We were particularly concerned to see such
high levels of inadequate intakes of these key bone
nutrients. These nutrients are particularly important as
we lay down our bone mass, with vitamin D needed to
absorb calcium. It is important that teenagers consume
a healthy, balanced diet to support this rapid phase of
growth and development.”
The IUNA National Teens’ Nutrition Survey assessed
food and nutrient intakes in 428 teenagers aged 13-
18 years across the Republic of Ireland. A sub-study
was commissioned by the National Dairy Council to
further explore the contribution of the “milk, yogurt and
cheese” food group to the nutritional quality of Irish
teenagers’ diets.

How Health Stores Ireland staff rate what they sell
This issue, Pearse Downey, retail assistant, and Frederika Le Cain,
owner–manager of Loop de Loop Health Store in Castletownbere,
Co Cork, test out a scalp oil, snack bars, aronia juice, hair conditioner,
B vitamin complex and throat spray.
Scalp Oil
Frederika says: “Mindful Beauty is an Irish brand I love for their quality and
pure ingredients. They have a Rosemary and Mint Scalp Oil I wouldn’t do
without. A couple of drops massaged into the scalp daily boosts the condition
of the hair no end. I have noticed my hair is shinier, stronger and more supple
since starting use of this product.”
Snack Bars
Pearse says: “Foods of Athenry have a fantastic range of gluten- and wheat-
free snack bars. Whether it be a granola bar or an orange bar they are a great
pick-me-up in the afternoon and a healthy snack during the day. They also
ofer vegan options like their Rocky Road Bar, and the cherry on top is they
are all delicious.”
Aronia Juice
Frederika says: “I take a half glass a day of the amazing PhyterBerry Aronia
Juice by Aronia Ireland. It is hugely beneficial as a source of polyphenols
to help boost metabolic health. I find it curbs my sweetness cravings and
balances my energy levels so I don’t get that 3pm slump. It also works well
for keeping the urinary tract healthy.”
Hair Conditioner
Pearse says: “JĀSÖN’s Biotin hair conditioner is brilliant. I started using it
when I had long hair to keep the ends in check. It was great at repairing the
hair and I kept using it after going back to short hair.”
B Vitamin Complex
Frederika says: “The Macanta supplement range is one of my most trusted
brands. Clean, pure ingredients with no nasties and plenty of expertise behind
them. Their vitamin B complex is a high potency wonder worker. Just one
easy-swallow capsule daily gives your body the B vitamins it needs. Their
many roles include energy production, nervous system balance and cognitive
function, so they are crucial in managing stress, supporting brain activity such
as memory and they keep me going while I run a busy health store.”
Throat Spray
Pearse says: “The Propolis Throat Spray by Bee Health is excellent. Whenever
I find myself developing a tickly throat I make sure I pick up a bottle of this to
get ahead of it. I’ve found that my dry or chesty coughs never develop. It is
excellent for stopping a cough that could ruin your week in its tracks.”
Store manager Angela McGlanaghey and assistant
manager Kelly Callaghan from Simple Simon’s Health
Food in Donegal Town review a magnesium powder, a
liquid multivitamin, a liquid probiotic, an ashwagandha
supplement, collagen peptides and a turmeric supplement.
Magnesium Powder
Angela says: “Mag 365 Bone Formula Magnesium
Powder is my favourite supplement because it has
so many benefits. Most of our customers looking for
magnesium are sufering from leg cramps or sleep
issues and we have found magnesium is great for both.
I particularly like the bone formula one as it also
contains vitamin D, K and zinc, so it’s fantastic for overall
bone support and health.”
Liquid Multivitamin
Kelly says: “NaturesPlus Source of Life Gold is easily
one of our best-selling products! Source of Life Gold is a
super strength multivitamin and mineral tonic containing
everything you need for daily immunity. It is the first
product we recommend to anyone looking for something
to boost their energy levels or something to give their
immune system a much-needed lift. It also contains no
iron which means it’s completely safe for those sufering
from hemochromatosis.”
Liquid Probiotic
Angela says: “We have only started stocking Symprove,
but we are already receiving fantastic feedback on it.
Symprove is a liquid probiotic: a unique product on
the Irish market. Because Symprove is in liquid form it’s
proven to reach the gut alive within 10 minutes and get
to work. Gut issues are linked to so many ailments in the
body, including skin issues, mood issues and much more.
So, by improving your gut health you are giving your body
the best chance you can.”
Ashwagandha Supplement
Kelly says: “One Nutrition Ashwagandha is easily my
favourite supplement! For someone like me, who struggles
with sleep, it’s a wonder supplement. As an adaptogen it
can be used for many diferent reasons, including anxiety
and stress management. More recently we have noticed a
huge uptake in people who do a lot of training using it for
recovery and reducing fatigue post-workout.”
Collagen Peptides
Angela says: “We have seen a massive uptake in the
demand for collagen in the last couple of years in our
store. Collagen has so many benefits, including boosting
gut health, supporting skin health, boosting hair strength
and it’s also an excellent protein source. We love
NaturesPlus Collagen Peptides as it’s a really high quality
form, with four diferent types of collagen from superior
sources, so it’s a great all-rounder.”
Turmeric Supplement
Kelly says: “Taka Turmeric is another fan favourite from
our customers including my own dad! A high strength
turmeric supplement with black pepperine, Taka Turmeric
can ofer joint support for those who need it by reducing
inflammation around the joints. A great value product with
500mg capsules, and 120 capsules per bottle, it means
that one a day will last you for four months.”
