Having visited

Norwich to help

celebrate City of

Ale many times

over the years, I’m

beyond excited

this year to be

able to enjoy it as

a recently arrived

resident of NR3.

I’ve been writing about beer for over twenty years,

written twelve books, and over that time, Norfolk

has acquired a very special place in my heart.

In 2015, for my book The Pub: A Cultural

Institution, I toured the country looking for pubs

with the best atmosphere. The book had to be

divided into equal sections around the country. In

some places, I struggled to make the quota. Here,

I had more than twice as many pubs that I wanted

to feature as I had room for. It’s the same judging

national pub competitions: the regional winners in

some areas aren’t as good as pubs that didn’t even

make the shortlist in Norfolk.

Now I’m here, it’s almost weird how good the

quality of the cask ale is. Having moved from

London, where it costs over £6 a pint and is

of extremely variable quality, I don’t think I’ve

yet had a bad pint in the city. And this is now

supplemented by some of the best modern craft

brewers in the country.

I can’t say that the beer and pubs were the main

reason I moved to Norwich (my wife would blow

her top if I did) but it was certainly a factor. The

most average pub out of the eleven we pass from

our new house when we walk into town is better

than our favourite pub where we lived back in

London. These pubs are full of pleasant, friendly

people. And they sit in a pretty, walkable city that

remains a well-kept secret to people who only

associate Norwich with Alan Partridge. There’s

rarely a day when we can resist popping in to one.

I’m looking forward to getting to know our local

pubs and brewers much better – and writing great

stories about them!

Cheers
