WELCOME

Welcome to City of Ale 2024

Welcome to this year’s City of Ale – and to the 50-plus participating pubs.

That’s the most ever.

It’ll come as no surprise that as a publican, I love

pubs. I started working in them aged 15, back in 1987,

when good pubs were always busy. That changed

over the decades. When Dawn Leeder and I founded

Norwich City of Ale in 2010, we were on a mission

to get more people back into the city’s great pubs,

bars and inns; to get them re-discovering the joys of

hospitality!

Ale Trails were created to give people an incentive

to explore the architecture and streets of the

city – as well as to visit pubs they’ve never been

to. Every year, tens of thousands of pub visits are

made because of them. Every year, trailers discover

historic buildings, hidden treasures, fine food, live

music, sports coverage, sport activities, pub quizzes,

pub gardens – as well as a stupendous range of

beers, and good company!

There is a positive energy around the Festival, and

I for one love the fact that we are part of a tradition

that goes back many centuries. Barley has been

grown and malted in Norfolk for at least 1,200 years

and the pub scene in Norwich dates back to 1250. Of

course, we’re not all about history: the main aim is

to celebrate and enjoy the fantastic hospitality and

beer now on off er. Probably a greater choice than

ever before!

There are loads of people to thank for that choice,

and for City of Ale. The amazing licensees of the city;

the outstanding local brewers, maltsters and barley-

growers; the excellent local branch of CAMRA; our

stupendous sponsor Farnell Clarke; Norwich BID,

who helped get the Festival off the ground; and

Roger Protz and all the beer writers who have raised

our profile nationally.

And of course, a massive thank you for your

support! Enjoy our fine city, our fine ales and our

fine pubs! Finally, just a reminder to check the

opening times of venues before heading to them:

they all vary!!

Cheers!
