WELCOME

Welcome to City of Ale 2024

Welcome to this year’s City of Ale – and to the 50-plus participating pubs.

That’s the most ever.

It’ll come as no surprise that as a publican, I love

pubs. I started working in them aged 15, back in 1987,

when good pubs were always busy. That changed

over the decades. When Dawn Leeder and I founded

Norwich City of Ale in 2010, we were on a mission

to get more people back into the city’s great pubs,

bars and inns; to get them re-discovering the joys of

hospitality!

Ale Trails were created to give people an incentive

to explore the architecture and streets of the

city – as well as to visit pubs they’ve never been

to. Every year, tens of thousands of pub visits are

made because of them. Every year, trailers discover

historic buildings, hidden treasures, fine food, live

music, sports coverage, sport activities, pub quizzes,

pub gardens – as well as a stupendous range of

beers, and good company!

There is a positive energy around the Festival, and

I for one love the fact that we are part of a tradition

that goes back many centuries. Barley has been

grown and malted in Norfolk for at least 1,200 years

and the pub scene in Norwich dates back to 1250. Of

course, we’re not all about history: the main aim is

to celebrate and enjoy the fantastic hospitality and

beer now on off er. Probably a greater choice than

ever before!

There are loads of people to thank for that choice,

and for City of Ale. The amazing licensees of the city;

the outstanding local brewers, maltsters and barley-

growers; the excellent local branch of CAMRA; our

stupendous sponsor Farnell Clarke; Norwich BID,

who helped get the Festival off the ground; and

Roger Protz and all the beer writers who have raised

our profile nationally.

And of course, a massive thank you for your

support! Enjoy our fine city, our fine ales and our

fine pubs! Finally, just a reminder to check the

opening times of venues before heading to them:

they all vary!!

Cheers!

OUR SPONSOR

A word from our sponsor…

It’s been a great honour to be sponsoring Norwich City of Ale for the past 7 years. As an accountancy firm

who love working with our pub and brewery clients, I’ve always seen our sponsorship as a way to support

the industry locally.

For me, this year has been slightly diff erent though.

Alongside Phil and the City of Ale team, Farnell Clarke have been much more involved in the planning and

organisation of the festival, something we were delighted to take on.

What this experience has shown me is the lengths those involved in the festival go to in order to make it a

success. From unique events being held at the pubs, to brewers supporting the all important launch party,

there’s a real sense of everyone pulling together to ensure it’s the best beer event of the year.

To those that have given their time and expertise to allow us as beer drinkers to have a month of ale

trailing fun, thank you.

All we need to do now is get to the pub and enjoy a delicious local pint!

WELCOME

Back in 1973 when the writer Christopher

Hutt published The Death of the English

Pub, he came to Norwich and found just

one pub serving real ale. The city once had

three big breweries, all bought and closed

by the London company Watney Mann.

As a result of this devastation, Norfolk, known

as “the grain basket of Britain” as a result of

producing the finest malting barley, had no

breweries and only a handful of pubs serving a

unique beer style that’s the envy of the world.

Scroll forward to 2024 and what a diff erent

picture. Today there are 45 breweries in Norfolk.

Let’s say that again: FORTY-FIVE breweries

operating in the county.

The Society of Independent Brewers reports

that sales of cask beer are on the increase again

following the Covid lockdowns that saw pubs

closed and hand pumps immobilised.

More than a decade ago, when Dawn Leeder and

Phil Cutter launched City of Ale, they had no idea

how vital this initiative would be in restoring good

beer and brewing to the region. Now the pubs are

open, trade is good and the choice of fine ales is

bountiful. Over the coming weeks, visit the pubs

supporting City of Ale and raise a foaming pint to

the glory of cask beer.

WELCOME

CAMRA welcome

Across the country, the big brewers and pubcos

are doing their best to transform pubs into soulless

drinking establishments, selling identikit products at

prices inflated by massive marketing campaigns – the

amount of money spent on campaigns to persuade

you to buy this ‘Spanish’ lager made in Tadcaster or

this one made by a Dutch company in Manchester is

eye-watering!

Fortunately, Norwich is blessed with dozens of small

and independent pubs selling ales brewed locally

using Norfolk’s excellent malt – did you know Nor-

folk-grown barley, converted to malt for brewing, is

some of the best in the world!

Smaller breweries have done their best to keep beer

prices down, but cannot absorb the higher costs

of energy, malt and hops resulting from the war in

Ukraine forever. The recent change to beer duty, in-

troducing a ‘lower’ rate of duty for beer sold through

pubs than through supermarkets, was welcome, but

far too small, and won’t be seen in pubs, as breweries

need to rebuild their margins.

Pubs’ overheads have also increased, especially

with uncontrolled increases in energy prices, and

footfall has decreased as those same increases aff ect

customers’ ability to spend.

CAMRA will continue to press the government for

assistance for the hospitality trade, increasing the

gap between the draught and supermarket duty

rates, reducing VAT on small independent pubs, and

reforming business rates. We also support pubs and

breweries directly, organising socials to visit pubs and

drink the breweries’ beers, and by protecting pubs

from conversion and demolition.

Non-members are welcome on all our socials – check

out the details at norwich.camra.org.uk – and join us

to support Norwich’s excellent independent pubs!

CHARITY

We are delighted to have

been chosen as the Norwich

City of Ale Charity for 2024.

10

cityofale.org.uk

Having visited

Norwich to help

celebrate City of

Ale many times

over the years, I’m

beyond excited

this year to be

able to enjoy it as

a recently arrived

resident of NR3.

I’ve been writing about beer for over twenty years,

written twelve books, and over that time, Norfolk

has acquired a very special place in my heart.

In 2015, for my book The Pub: A Cultural

Institution, I toured the country looking for pubs

with the best atmosphere. The book had to be

divided into equal sections around the country. In

some places, I struggled to make the quota. Here,

I had more than twice as many pubs that I wanted

to feature as I had room for. It’s the same judging

national pub competitions: the regional winners in

some areas aren’t as good as pubs that didn’t even

make the shortlist in Norfolk.

Now I’m here, it’s almost weird how good the

quality of the cask ale is. Having moved from

London, where it costs over £6 a pint and is

of extremely variable quality, I don’t think I’ve

yet had a bad pint in the city. And this is now

supplemented by some of the best modern craft

brewers in the country.

I can’t say that the beer and pubs were the main

reason I moved to Norwich (my wife would blow

her top if I did) but it was certainly a factor. The

most average pub out of the eleven we pass from

our new house when we walk into town is better

than our favourite pub where we lived back in

London. These pubs are full of pleasant, friendly

people. And they sit in a pretty, walkable city that

remains a well-kept secret to people who only

associate Norwich with Alan Partridge. There’s

rarely a day when we can resist popping in to one.

I’m looking forward to getting to know our local

pubs and brewers much better – and writing great

stories about them!

Cheers
