We had ideal surf conditions although the weather was a little rainy at times,
but that didn’t deter the competitors with over 50 board paddlers competing
in the Annual Clubbie Classic.
Held on Sunday the 10th of December 2023, it was the seventh Clubbie Classic and
was well attended by Club Members and visitors as always. This annual social
race event involves all board style races including a dash for glory sprint race, a
mega relay, eight teams of five, The M shape course, and the crowd favourite, The
Style Riding event, a scored event of manoeuvres on a wave in five minute heats.
We were entertained by great wave riding, including stand ups, headstands,
coffin rides, and an array of manoeuvres. The Style Riding event is named in
memory of Pete Meyer, a true Bondi boy and great waterman, board paddler,
and competitor for both Bondi and North Bondi Surf Clubs. All competitors receive
a Clubbie Classic T-shirt and enjoy the post race BBQ and presentation of medals
afterwards.
Board paddlers from Umina Surf Club joined us again this year with past Bondi
Member Damon Somerfield. Thank you to the Umina crew for their efforts to
attend and adding to the fun on the day.
The day doesn’t come together without the help of quite a few people, so we
would like to thank the following for making the day a success. Pat Moore
guest judge of the style riding, Nick Nezval for the entertaining commentary on
the microphone, Dori Miller for a last minute salad, Steve Hackers for always
being there to lend a hand and on the BBQ and Tim Read photographer as
always for the fantastic action shots. We thank Di Meyer and the Meyer family
for their support.
