Chronicles of the
Chef de Mision
Ian Kelly, CD., is a man with many accolades.
On Friday, August 23, 2024, Mr. Kelly
presented at our General Meeting in his
capacity as Chef de Mission of Jamaica for
the recently concluded Paris Olympics
Games.
The
presentation
highlighted
Jamaica's
performance, with athletes excelling in the
disciplines
that
are
‘unusual’
for
the
country’s athletes to excel in.
Mr Kelly emphasized the strategic planning
and preparation required for the successful
execution of the games and to ensure
comfort to the athletes. Those initiatives
contributed to the overall comfort of the
athletes, their success, training camps,
logistical support, and collaboration with
international partners.
Challenges such as weather conditions,
catering, rooming, and travel logistics were
addressed with solutions implemented in
real-time to ensure athletes remained
focused on their events.
The
presentation
also
discussed
the
importance of fostering young talent and
ensuring the continuity of Jamaica's legacy
in athletics. Additionally, the Chef de Mision
praised
the
athletes'
dedication
and
resilience.

The Strength of Tradition and
Diversification in RCNK
www.newkingstonrotaroy.org
While tradition anchors us, diversification
propels us forward. RCNK is a microcosm of
the wider world, with an almost equal ratio of
male and female members and a satisfactory
age
span
that
ranges
from
young
professionals to seasoned veterans. This
diversity is one of our greatest strengths.
Our Rotary Club has stood as a beacon
of community service, leadership, and
fellowship. As we reflect on our journey,
it becomes clear that our success is
rooted
in
two
key
elements:
the
preservation of cherished traditions
and the embrace of diversification.
These dual pillars have not only allowed
us to thrive for over three decades but
have also positioned us to continue
making a meaningful impact in the
years to come.
Tradition serves as the foundation upon
which RCNK was built. From the weekly
meetings and time-honored rituals to
the annual service projects that have
become synonymous with our club,
these
practices
create
a
sense
of
continuity and stability. They remind us
of our shared history, values, and
purpose.
Tradition fosters a sense of belonging
among our members. It connects us to
the past and to each other, creating a
strong sense of community that is
essential for any organization’s longevity.
Longstanding charter members who
have been with the club since its
inception serve as custodians of these
traditions, guiding newer members and
instilling in them the values that have
sustained the club for so long.
When we undertake a project, our
reputation
precedes
us,
bolstering
support from both within and outside
the club. Further,
The Power of Tradition
The Role of Diversification
it has built the camaraderie between our
members, which leads to the comfort of
our visitors and the ongoing jest and
familial atmosphere at fellowships.
Moreover, tradition lends credibility and
trust to our club’s efforts. The community
recognizes and respects our established
presence, making it easier to engage in
successful
fundraising
and
service
initiatives.

Diversification cont’d ...
www.newkingstonrotaroy.org
It also sets a positive example for the
community, demonstrating the importance
of equality and diversity in leadership and
service.
Additionally, the diversity of our members’
professional backgrounds and experiences
enriches the club’s collective knowledge and
skill set. This variety allows us to tackle a
broader range of issues and engage in more
complex projects, as we can draw on the
expertise of members from different fields.
This balance is not without its challenges.
It requires a willingness to adapt while
respecting the legacy of those who came
before us.
However, our club’s history has shown
that we are more than capable of meeting
this challenge head-on. The success of
RCNK - 35 years later - can be attributed
to our commitment to both tradition and
diversification.
These
elements
have
allowed us to create a strong, inclusive,
and forward-thinking organization that is
well-equipped to meet the needs of our
community and the world. As we look to
the future, we do so with the confidence
that our unique blend of the old and the
new will continue to drive us toward
greater heights.
The real strength of the RCNK lies in the
balance
between
tradition
and
diversification. By holding onto our time-
honoured practices, we maintain a solid
foundation and a clear identity. At the same
time, by embracing diversity in all its forms,
we ensure that our club evolves with the
times, remains relevant, and continues to
attract new members.
This balance is not without its challenges.
Balancing Tradition and Diversification
Gender balance within the club has fostered
an environment of inclusivity and mutual
respect. This equal representation, which
began in RCNK in 2010, ensures that our
initiatives benefit from a wide range of
viewpoints,
making
them
more
comprehensive and effective.
Diversification brings fresh perspectives and
ideas to the table, which is crucial in a world
that is constantly changing. Newer, younger
members often bring innovative approaches
to problem-solving and a willingness to
challenge the status quo, ensuring that our
club remains relevant and dynamic.

Past President Garth Alexander,
MBBS MS FRCOG FACOG
MINE U MEMBA
www.newkingstonrotaroy.org
Past President, Garth Alexander is quiet yet a
force to be reckoned with. One of the most
genuine and loving Rotarian RCNK is blessed
with. This amazing Rotarian is our Mine U
Memba Feature in this week’s issue of the
Weekly Riser.
Thanks to his sponsor, PP Mitch, PP Garth
joined the Rotary Movement in May of 1996. His
passion for service and fellowship and the need
for social interaction inspired him to become a
member of RCNK.
PP Garth has held numerous positions in the
club, including Disaster Committee Chair
(2013-2014) and President in RY2003-2004.
Among his many achievements within the
club, PP Garth, with the help of PP Locksley,
established an essay competition among High
Schools addressing Dispute Resolution. He has
been instrumental in Peace and Conflict
Resolution initiatives and was formerly on the
planning committee of our annual Vocational
Awards.
When asked, PP Garth will not be shy to say
that one of his most memorable and proudest
achievements is the establishment of the
Rotaract Club of New Kingston. An initiative
that
has,
to
this
day,
a
profound
and
immeasurable impact. Thank you, PP Garth!
District
Conferences
and
International
Conventions are no strange feat to PP Garth,
who has attended four conventions to date
and is certain to attend another slated for RY
2025-26.
