LAST FRIDAY @ ROTARY

LAST FRIDAY @ ROTARY

LAST FRIDAY @ ROTARY

Dr Carey Wallace shares his passion about the diversity and

viability of the Tourism industry in Jamaica ...

At last week’s meeting of the

Rotary Club of New Kingston,

members had the pleasure of

hearing from Dr. Carey Wallace,

Executive

Director

of

the

Tourism Enhancement Fund,

who delivered an insightful

presentation on the importance

of tourism as a viable and

sustainable career option.

highlighting

the

immense

potential the industry holds for

economic

empowerment.

"Tourism should not be seen

merely as a sector but as a

viable career path," Dr. Wallace

stated.

He underscored the significant

opportunities

that

remain

untapped within the industry,

encouraging young people to

consider tourism as a means of

securing

their

economic

livelihood.

Dr. Wallace further illustrated

the industry’s potential as a

major revenue earner, sharing

that last year alone, tourism

generated

a

substantial

amount

of

income,

which

reflects its critical role in the

national economy.

However, he also pointed out

that there are still many areas

within the tourism sector that

have yet to be fully explored,

leaving room for growth and

innovation.

The

Rotary

Club

of

New

Kingston expressed gratitude

for Dr. Wallace's visit and his

insightful perspectives, which

have

undoubtedly

inspired

members

to

consider

the

broader implications of tourism

and

its

potential

to

drive

economic development.

Weekly Riser | Page 3

Dr. Wallace emphasized the

importance

of

recognizing

tourism as a viable career path

and advocated for its deeper

integration

into

the

school

curriculum. He also stressed

the

need

to

raise

greater

awareness

about

tourism

within the local community.

One and One with PP Lowell Dilworth who shares his views on

membership and Rotary ...

Past

President

Dr.

Lowell

Dilworth,

aka

"the

stylish

doctor,"

is

a

distinguished

Lecturer

and

Consultant

Chemical Pathologist in the

Department of Pathology at the

University of the West Indies,

Mona Campus, his alma mater.

A proud alumnus of Titchfield

High School, UWI and Surrey

University, Dr. Dilworth is also a

certified teacher, bringing a

wealth

of

knowledge

and

experience to his professional

endeavors.

A dedicated Rotarian for ten

years, PP Lowell has been an

integral

part

of

his

club's

activities, particularly in the

successful

execution

of

numerous community service

projects. His commitment to

service is further evidenced by

his previous role as Secretary

and his current position as Vice

President.

Known for his impeccable style,

charm,

and

humility,

Dr.

Dilworth carries himself with a

quiet dignity and an unwavering

passion for service.

Weekly Riser | Page 4

His contributions to Rotary and

the wider community continue

to inspire those around him.

Weekly Riser caught up with

him for a lil fireside chat.

WR: What inspired you to join the

Rotary Club of New Kingston, and

what does being a member mean

to you?

LD: I have the need to give service

in an organized manner plus other

persons that I know were already

in the club. Being a member

allows for fellowship and charity

in diverse locales which is quite

fulfilling.

WR: Please share a specific

project or initiative that the club

has worked on that you are

particularly proud of?

MINE U MEMBA

MINE U MEMBA

MINE U MEMBA

WR: What advice would you give

to someone considering joining

Rotary for the first time?

WR: We executed a water project

in the underserved community

of Kintyre a few years ago. At a

time when hand sanitization was

gaining

traction

as

preventative measure against

some transmissible diseases,

the impact on the community

was telling. We were also

fortunate to have the District

Governor visit us for the handing

over of that project.

WR: How has your involvement in

Rotary influenced your personal

and professional life?

LD: My involvement in Rotary

has

improved

my

overall

confidence

as

well

as

my

leadership skills.

WR: What are some of the

biggest challenges the Rotary

Club of New Kingston faces in its

mission to serve the community?

LD: The emphasis on ‘self’ and not

the club is a significant challenge

in my opinion...

WR: How do you see the role of

Rotary evolving in the coming

years, especially in response to

global issues?

LD: As times change, though

processes and methods will

change. I see Rotary adapting to

change as we take on new and

emerging

crises

globally

especially with regard to our

focus on disease prevention.

Methods currently employed to

prevent diseases may have to

change in order to be effective.

WR: Can you share the

importance of the Four-Way Test

in your work with Rotary and how

it guides your decision-making?

LD: The 4 way test sets the

foundation for all that is done in

the professional as well as in the

personal space. Once adhered

to, there is a high chance of

making good decisions daily.

LD: Be prepared to be an agent of

change

not

only

to

your

immediate community but also to

the wider community.

WR: How do you think the club

should engage new and younger

members and encourage them to

take on leadership roles?

LD: In my humble opinion, I

believe that we ought to learn

their strengths, encourage their

participation, indulge them by

listening and guiding them once

they take on such roles.

WR: In your opinion, what are the

key qualities that make for a

successful Rotarian?

LD: Someone who is a good

listener, someone who takes the

opinions of all concerned into

consideration, someone who can

facilitate and maintain good team

spirit by using tactful leadership

skills. Someone who wants to

make a difference and actively

seeks ways of fulfilling this goal.

THE DISTRICT

GOVERNOR’S VISIT

Visit the Peace Garden Project

Let’s make this visit memorable and showcase the

incredible spirit of our Rotary Club of New Kingston!

We are thrilled to announce that District Governor

Dominique Bazin and her husband will be gracing us

with their presence in Jamaica this September! Mark

your calendars for Friday, September 13, as DG Bazin

will be visiting the Rotary Club of New Kingston.

During her visit, DG Bazin will address our meeting,

sharing her insights and vision, and will also join us

for our Board meeting. This is a fantastic opportunity

for us to engage with her and gain valuable

perspectives on our ongoing projects and future

endeavors.

We have planned a special itinerary to showcase

some of the impactful work our club is involved in.

DG Bazin will tour the Peace Garden project, which

we are developing in partnership with the National

Education Trust (NET) at Swallowfield Primary

School. This project promises to be a beacon of hope

and inspiration for the community.

To celebrate this special visit, we will host DG Bazin for

lunch and a festive evening on September 13. It's a

wonderful chance for all members to connect, enjoy each

other’s company, and show our appreciation for her

leadership and support.

We encourage every member to attend and participate in

these exciting events. Your presence will not only honor

DG Bazin but also demonstrate our collective commitment

to the Rotary values we cherish.

If schedule allows, we will also invite DG Bazin to visit the

Water Harvesting project in Fullerswood, St. Elizabeth—a

crucial initiative supported by the Disaster Response Grant

we received from the District. This visit will highlight the

tangible benefits of our collective efforts and the

difference we are making on the ground.

In a remarkable display of community spirit and commitment to education, the Rotary Club of

New Kingston has joined forces with the National Education Trust (NET) to develop a Peace

Garden at Swallowfield Primary and Infant School. This initiative is set to provide students with

a tranquil and inspiring space that promotes emotional well-being, creativity, and peace.

The Peace Garden, a first-of-its-kind

project for the school, will be more than

just a green space. The Rotary Club of

New Kingston is spearheading several

key elements of the project, including

the construction of a welcoming gate,

the painting of a vibrant mural, the

installation of sails to provide shade,

and a punching bag to help students

channel their energy in a positive way.

These features are designed to create a

sanctuary where children can reflect,

relax, and rejuvenate, fostering a

peaceful atmosphere that complements

their educational environment.

The Peace Garden will be officially unveiled on Friday,

September 13, in a ceremony marked by the visit of

District Governor Dominique Bazin.

The Rotary Club of New Kingston and NET’s

collaboration on this project reflects a shared vision of

nurturing not only academic growth but also the

holistic development of young minds. The Peace

Garden stands as a symbol of hope, resilience, and the

enduring commitment to creating a supportive

environment for students.
