SUMMER
NEWSLETTER
TRANSITION
YEAR
2024
And so, just like that, our students end their
Transition Year journey and head into their
Leaving Cert cycle. Here is a snapshot of what
they were up to in the last few busy weeks.
Teachers were hugely impressed with the
standard of the end of year interviews. The effort
put into the e-portfolios was outstanding and it
was nice for students to share their experience of
TY with their teachers. Students have improved
hugely in confidence this year and hopefully it will
stand to them when applying for jobs in the near
future.
Following online training from Bank of Ireland, the
school bank team opened their branch in May.
They had a marketing campaign throughout the
school in the lead up to some busy days. The
team were Bank Manager: Giorgi Herterich, Sales
& Marketing Manager: Tommy Griffin, Operations
& Audit Specialist: Aine Groves, Customer Digi
Advisors: Faye O’ Mahony & Rian Dalton.
We were thrilled to have the opportunity to
complete a second Summit Sister’s programme
this term. Another 12 girls got to experience three
hill walks up the Comeraghs incorporating art
and photography into their trips.
With a 4am start on day 1, we had some very tired
heads as we crossed the Irish Sea for our trip to
Manchester. Along the way we stopped at Cheshire
Oaks for some food and shopping. The evening
destination was bowling and laser tag in the Trafford
Centre. They somehow managed to have the energy
to keep going with games of pool and board games
at the hostel. The next day, the students had a
fabulous day in Alton Towers where some students
conquered their fears and went on rollercoasters. For
those not into the wild rides, there was plenty on
offer in the beautiful setting beside the old ruins, with
some oversized teddies making their way back to the
bus. Sunday saw the group go to the Science and
Industry museum, the Imperial War museum and
finally Old Trafford. There was something for
everyone and even ABU fans enjoyed walking onto
the pitch to the sound of the crowd. The trip was
great fun and new friendships were formed. We had
so many compliments from the museums and
restaurants that we went to about the manners and
behaviour of the group. It certainly was a memorable
trip for all.
Manchester
HELL & BACK
The
TY
group
travelled
to
Kilruddery, Wicklow for a fun (and
torturous) trip to Hell and Back.
The sun was splitting the rocks
throughout the course, where the
students had to help each other
get past obstacles and encourage
each other to keep going. The
highlight of the day was sliding
down at the end of the course
into muck and dirt - the muckier,
the better!
Environmental Leadership
Award &
Active Travel Group
There have been so many highlights
this year. All of the students have been
outstanding
ambassadors
for
the
school
and
the
Environmental
Leadership Development Programme.
The EDLP students were rewarded for
their work all year on their visit to
Sanofi. They were presented with a
beautiful trophy each to acknowledge
their
journey
they
have
made
throughout the year.
We'd like to give a big shout out to our
amazing
permaculturist
Damian
Nicholls and Mr. Kirwan who have done
a tremendous job training the TYs in
our Outdoor Classroom.
Our Active Travel group were worthy
winners of the overall group prize at
the Waterford Division Garda Youth
Award this year. They have been
present every week and have shown
great commitment to their cause. They
were rewarded with a trip to Mount
Congreve to finish the year.
Well done to all 47 TY students who
participated in the Bronze Gaisce hike
and cycle in May. Students who had
completed three key challenge areas of
community involvement, personal skill and
physical recreation went on to face the
tough challenge of the adventure journey.
They combined hiking and cycling on the
Greenway over two days. The weather
was horrific so they all truly deserve their
President’s Award. It shows the great
commitment and dedication of those who
received the award and we would like to
encourage students to continue on the
Gaisce Journey with the Silver award.
GAISCE AWARD
John Paul II award students were very busy after
Easter completing their JPII reflection and record
cards. The students worked very hard throughout
the
year
in
the
school
community
and
volunteering in the local church. Well done to all
the students who received their medals in the
cathedral from Bishop Alphonsus.
Three of our JP II students had the pleasure of
travelling to Medjugorje on a pilgrimage with the
Waterford Lismore diocese. It was an amazing,
enriching and spiritual experience for all
involved.
JOHN PAUL II AWARD
COMPETITIONS
Well done to Conor Lanigan, Rory
Downey and Connor Slattery who won a
communications award at Scifest. Their
project was ‘Does colour affect the
perception of taste?’.
Ruairi O’ Byrne, Finn Rogers and Tommy
Griffin should also be proud of their
entry with their project ‘Will plants grow
in different liquids?’. Thank you to Ms.
Dunphy for her help in the lead up to the
competition.
Freddie Brazil, Alfie Dunphy, David Twomey
and Cian McCarthy attended the final of
the Young Environmental Awards in Dublin
with their project "Flying High". Their idea
of a bird house beside the nursing home
with a camera caught the eyes of the
judges in qualification. Well done to our
other teams, with Green Tramore getting
their whole class involved in a beach
clean.
Students had their showcase for Junk
Kouture. After months of work, students
displayed their costumes to students in the
school. All their costumes were made from
recycled material. They displayed amazing
creativity. Well done to the winning
costume which was created by Mia
Costello, Evie Burke, Laoise Murphy, Áine
Power and Ella Power.
During
career
guidance
class,
students had access to medical talks
from UHW. These included areas such
as
pharmacy,
radiography,
occupational therapy, physiotherapy
to name a few.
Students
completed
the
‘Looking into Law’ course run by
the Bar of Ireland this term.
Students were shown the route
to becoming a barrister, looked
at the variety of careers in law
and delved into criminal and
civil law, finishing up with law
and social media.
FUTURE CAREERS
Local Grace O Sullivan spoke
to TYs about her career so far
in
Greenpeace
and
the
European Parliament. It was
lovely to see the connection
with Tramore and to see the
paths that students might
take when they leave school.
A number of students completed the
Safe pass course and aim to use it
when they are working on a building
site over the summer.
ACTIVE TERM
It was great to get the
opportunity to sample some of
the local facilities this term.
Students were welcomed to
the golf club. For most it was
the first time to play golf and
hopefully not the last.
This year Water Safety Ireland
created a programme called ‘Get
Wise’. Some of our newly qualified
lifeguards, along with the PE
teachers, ran the course with 1st
Years.
The
TYs
used
the
opportunity
to
show
their
knowledge and teach students
basic life saving skills in case of
emergency
Golf
Water Safety
Rugby
Our newly qualified coaches,
along with some Future Leader
students, helped run a rugby
blitz for all the Tramore primary
schools. It was no mean feat,
with close on 500 children
played on the school pitch
We have a multi talented group in Transition Year
and this was particularly obvious during our
production of 'The Audition'. Along with our
fabulous actors and actresses on the stage, we
had
the
choreographer,
students
working
backstage, running the tuck shop and much more.
All of them combined to make a fantastic show.
The Audition
Following the Dare to Believe programme in SPHE, we
received a visit from Olympian Marcus Lawlor. Marcus
spoke to the group and had a practical workshop
outside.
Dare To Believe
The history department organised a trip to
Dublin to the Epic museum. In the museum,
students got to see the story of Irish
emigration
over
the
centuries.
They
discovered why people left Ireland and saw
how the Irish influenced the world they
found.
Well done to all students who were
acknowledged for their excellent behaviour
this year at the end of year party.
Congratulations to the 31 students who
completed the Future Leaders Award this
year. Students spent time completing their
tasks
in
Coaching,
Refereeing,
Event
Management and Performance Analysis and
put all their skills to use in the running of
their events. Well done to all the students
who completed all the required modules and
were awarded with the full Future Leader
Award. We were thrilled to find out that we
have been awarded a Silver award from the
GAA for the work that has been done by this
group. Thank you to Mr. Cleary and Ms.
Curran for their work with both groups.
We are very proud of our YSI group for the
connection they have made with the nursing
home and its residents this year. They
finished up just before the holidays with a
lovely group meet up and presentation.
Hopefully they will continue their visits over
the summer.
