Steaming Ahead With STEM

Core of the Tartan

he English word ‘tartan’ finds its roots in French literature

where the word ‘tiretain’ (which means woven cloth) refers

to a beautiful and prestigious design. Originating in Gaelic

culture, the tartan and design – consisting of stripes of

various widths and colours that cross at right angles against

a solid background – was in the mid – nineteenth century

associated with Scottish clans. Each clan had a different and

traditional pattern that distinguished it from the others, and

was comprised of hues that were sacred to their ideals. Later

in 1782, tartan was adopted as the symbolic national dress

of Scotland and is now viewed as a pattern of great historical

significance. Just like the tartan of yore, our school magazine

Tartan, holds in it glimpses of the manifold curricular, co –

curricular and extra – curricular activities that fill our calendar

each year round. We are named so, as a tribute to each student

– whose culture, background, ideals, talents and creativity –

blend harmoniously to create the éclatant BSS Tartan.

As we turn the pages of another vibrant chapter

in the journey of the school, I am filled with

immense pride and joy to share our collective

achievements and future aspirations. We have

not only been country toppers for two years

consecutively but also have had excellent

placements in reputed national and international

universities including the Ivy Leagues. Our

students continue to excel in sports and other

co-curricular activities. These results are a

testament to our students’ relentless pursuit of

excellence and the unwavering support of our

management, our future-ready educators, and our encouraging parents.

As we reflect on our past and celebrate our present, we must also focus on the future. The world

is evolving rapidly. Innovations in the field of artificial intelligence continue to shape the future

of humanity across nearly every industry. We have not only collaborated with experts to provide

students with access to cutting-edge technology and expert mentorship but also have taken

significant steps to incorporate AI into our curriculum. Our students will now be able to stand on

the shoulders of AI by leveraging not just tech skills but also human qualities that machines cannot

replicate. Critical thinking, curiosity, and questioning are more important than ever. At school,

our children don’t just learn to read but dare to question what they read. Our enquiry-based

classroom interactions, project-based learning opportunities, events like Perspective 360, SMUN,

IYP, Back In Business, and other student-led initiatives are steps in this direction. Our classrooms

continue to evolve into collaborative zones, providing immersive educational environments to

ensure effective student engagement.

While we believe in changing with changing times, we also understand the importance of

preserving our values and our cultural identity which stands on the principles of discipline,

mutual respect, and integrity.

As we steam ahead with our STEM learning initiatives, with a sense of history in the air and

optimism for the future, our vision is clear: to cultivate a generation of thinkers, innovators,

and problem solvers who have the cognitive flexibility and emotional intelligence that will help

answer tomorrow’s questions.

“Most people say that it is the intellect which makes a great scientist.

They are wrong: it is character.” - Albert Einstein

Psalm 23

The lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want

He makes me down to lie

In pastures green : he leadeth me

the quiet waters by.

my soul he doth restore again:

and me to walk doth make

within the paths of righteousness,

ev’n for his own name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale,

yet will I fear none ill :

For thou art with me; and thy rod

and staff me comfort still.

my table thou hast furnished

in presence of my foes :

my head thou dost with oil anoint,

and my cup overflows.

Goodness and mercy all my life

shall surely follow me :

and in God’s house for evermore

my dwelling-place shall be.

It is rightly said that, ‘It only takes a spark to get a fire going.’ At Bombay Scottish School Mahim this year, we

have marched together, hand in hand, braving all odds to foster a culture of literacy and igniting the flame of

curiosity and lifelong learning.

Like a flame in the darkness, literacy illuminates pathways to knowledge, empowerment, and opportunity.

From the moment we grasp our first picture book in primary school to dissecting complex texts in higher grades,

debating, putting our thoughts into eloquent words, every step demands resilience and determination.

With perseverance and faith as our compass, we have journeyed together. We at BSSM have and always will

illuminate the world with our light of knowledge. With God’s grace, BSSM is proud to say that things considered

impossible were made possible in the bygone year.

Let us build a brighter tomorrow for many more generations to come. So, go ahead and relive the pleasant

memories embedded in the pages of Tartan 2024.
