Apex Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources

REFUND POLICY

Full Refunds - Registration fees are 100% refundable when programs and events are canceled or adjusted by the Apex Parks, Recreation,

and Cultural Resources Department. Te Director of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources shall have the authority to make decisions

on all requests not specifcally covered herein. No refunds will be issued when the amount is less than $6.00.

Withdrawals/Transfers

1. Withdrawal 10 Calendar days or more in advance. A participant requesting to withdraw from a class must provide a written request

at least 10 calendar days in advance of the scheduled start date of the program. Te participant will receive the full refund of fees minus

a $5.00 processing fee.

2. Withdrawal less than 10 Calendar days in advance. A participant requesting a refund in writing, less than 10 calendar days prior to

the scheduled start date of the program, will receive a 75% refund of the fees only if the participant can be replaced from the waiting list.

If there is not a waiting list for the program or athletic league then no refund will be issued.

3. Withdrawal afer First meeting of a program/First regular season game. A participant requesting to withdraw, on the day of or afer

the frst meeting of any program, or the frst regular season game of the afected league, will not be issued a refund.

4. Transfer Request. A participant requesting to transfer from one class date to another, within the same program and registration

period, must do so in writing at least 10 calendar days or more prior to the scheduled start date of the program.

5. Adult Team Withdrawals. Refunds for adult athletic programs requiring “team” registration will be issued based on policies and

procedures covering that particular program and are not subject to #s 1, 2, 3, and 4 above.

6. Youth Sports League Withdrawals. If there is a tryout for the athletic league, a full refund minus a $5.00 processing fee will be issued if

a written request to withdraw is made prior to the tryout day for the league. If the written request is made afer the tryout for the athletic

league, a 75% refund will be issued only if the participant can be replaced from the waiting list.

7. Ticketed Events. All ticket sales are fnal. Refunds and withdrawals are not permitted.

Medical and Scholastic Exceptions - A full refund of all fees paid, minus a $5.00 processing fee, will be made for Athletic and Non-

Athletic Programs only if: 1. Prior to the frst meeting of a program or the frst game of the regular season the participant requests a

refund in writing including a written excuse from a licensed medical doctor indicating that the participant should not participate due to

medical concerns or physical limitations. 2. Prior to the frst meeting of a program or the frst game of the regular season the participant

requests a refund in writing including written verifcation that the participant has been included in either a Middle School, High School,

or College program that prohibits participation in recreational programs. Written verifcation can include a letter from the team coach, an

ofcial team roster from the school or other school document indicating the school policy which prohibits the registrant’s participation.

How to Register for Programs

For the purposes of Apex Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources program registration, an Apex resident is considered to be

any family or individual that resides within the established corporate limits of the Town as defned by the Apex Planning and

Community Development Department. Non-residents who may have an Apex mailing address but live outside the corporate limits

are considered “ETJ” (Extra Territorial Jurisdiction). Apex residents are given a two-week registration period before non-residents

and ETJ participants can register for programs. Many of our programs fll quickly and waiting lists are formed. When we call

participants of the waiting lists, residents are given priority followed by ETJ and then the remaining non-residents.

Apex has two dog parks located at Hunter Street Park (1250

Ambergate Station) and Apex Nature Park (2600 Evans

Road). Registration is available at the Community Center or

WHAT IS A REASONABLE ADA MODIFICATION?

Reasonable modifcations are resources used to help allow a person with a disability to participate in any program. Resources

may include, but are not limited to, auxiliary aids or services, adaptive equipment, additional staf training, and/or additional

staf. Any modifcation that the Department considers cannot fundamentally alter a program.

Inclusion and Medical Support Services

Te gyms at the John M. Brown Community Center are

available for all to use to play basketball and/or volleyball

during Open Gym hours. To participate, an Open Gym Pass

must be purchased in person at the Community Center.

Monthly Open Gym schedules (subject to change) are

John M. Brown Community Center

• Our newest building which opened in 2021, the Senior Center has the largest rental

Senior 55+ population.

The Halle Cultural Arts Center

• Te most historic of our facilities, Te Halle has a large auditorium available

for rentals, a rotating art gallery and hosts a majority of our cultural arts

classes and events. Te Halle also has its own website and social media pages

Pleasant Park & More

• Apex has many Town-owned parks including our newest, Pleasant Park, which

features numerous felds and courts, an Enchanted Forest playground and a

splashpad. Most of our parks have ball felds and shelters. Shelters are available for

rent at select parks and reservations can be made online. Soccer and Baseball/Sofball

feld rentals are also available when they not being used by the Town. Shelters and

felds can be used for free (frst come frst served) when not rented or in use by the

agencies and companies will be in attendance to provide

you with information on nutrition, staying active, medical

encouraged to attend. Rafe prizes and giveaways included.

Note on Senior Trips

Departure Site: All trips will depart from the Apex Senior Center: 63 Hunter St. Apex, NC 27502

Departure time: Te beginning time for each trip is bus departure time.

Communication: Please provide an email address on your registration form so that staf can communicate any additional trip details. Please

make sure you add meghan.rushing@apexnc.org to your safe sender list. All trip communications will come directly from this

email.

Allergies and Special Accommodations: Please notify staf when registering if you have any physical and/or dietary limitations

or needs (e.g. Lactose intolerant, use a walker, gluten-free, vegetarian, etc.).

Transportation: All trips will take place on a chartered motor coach or Town-owned passenger bus. Rest stops are made on longer

trips. We are unable to accommodate special requests or reserve seats on vehicles.

Cancellation/ Refund Policy: 1. If a refund is requested in writing prior to the registration deadline, a full refund minus a $5.00

processing fee will be issued. 2. If a participant requests a refund in writing afer the registration deadline and 48 hours prior to

trip departure, a 75% refund will be issued if the participant can be replaced from the waiting list. If there is not a waiting list

for the program then no refund will be issued. 3. If 48 hours prior to the trip departure, a written excuse from a licensed medical

doctor is provided indicating that the participant should not participate due to medical concerns or physical limitations, a partial

refund will be issued afer deducting expenses incurred by the Town of Apex-Apex Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources

Department such as prepaid admission fees, tickets, deposits, and a $5.00 processing fee. 4. For situations where non-refundable

deposits and admission fees must be paid in advance by the Town, no refunds will be given to participants who cancel.

MURDER MYSTERY ~ MURDER AT

THE DEADWOOD SALOON

Join us for a night of murder and mayhem in the wild west!

It's the First Annual Deadwood Poker Tournament! With

a smattering of bandits, bankers, saloon girls, sherifs,

gamblers, east coast debutantes, and of course a few of the

locals, this is guaranteed to make for a very interesting

evening indeed. You will be given a part in the murder

mystery, come in character, and try to solve the mystery.

Everyone's a suspect when murder is on the menu! You will

be given a script for your part in the mystery 2 weeks in

advance. Enjoy a delicious dinner while you help solve the

THE FALL BALL

Join us for a wonderful night co-sponsored by Te Toppers

Club. Enjoy a night of socializing, great food, and ballroom

dancing with a LIVE band! Tis will be a fun, yet formal

dance. It is highly recommended that men wear a tuxedo or

dark suit. Women should wear a long formal dress, cocktail

dress, or nice dress pants. Location: Apex Senior Center

A PIRATES LIFE: QUEEN ANN'S

REVENGE

Seize the opportunity to be among the frst groups to see

pieces of the ship and objects touched by pirates that have

been hidden under the ocean for almost 300 years! At the

Queen Anne's Revenge Conservation Lab in Greenville, NC

we will experience all that is involved in preserving these

priceless artifacts recovered from the shipwreck identifed as

the pirate Blackbeard's fagship, Queen Anne's Revenge. Afer

lunch at Te Seahorse Restaurant we will travel to Simply

Natural Creamery to enjoy ice cream made from the milk of

their on-site, grass fed cows. Walking Level: Moderate.

NC STATE FAIR

A day at the NC Fair is always Te Best Day Ever! Especially

on Senior Day! Seniors 65+ are free and seniors under 65

will have to pay $13 at the gate. Seniors 65+ will get to kick-

of the day with the Senior Fun Fest, while supplies last,

Bojangles Biscuits and cofee will be served on the Dorton

Patio. Afer that, everyone will get to take in all the amazing

things the NC Fair has to ofer including music, rides, shows,

livestock, delicious food, and more! Walking Level: Moderate

to intense, uneven surfaces.

TEMPLE THEATRE: RING OF FIRE

Te songbook of Johnny Cash comes to life in this musical

about love and faith, struggle and success, and the healing

power of home and family. More than two dozen classic

hits—“I Walk Te Line,” “A Boy Named Sue,” “Folsom Prison

Blues,” and the title tune — performed by a multi-talented

cast, paints a musical portrait of Te Man in Black that

promises to be a crowd-pleasing salute to a unique musical

legend! Enjoy lunch at La Dolce Vita Pizzeria and some free-

time in downtown Sanford before the show. Te cost of this

trip includes deluxe motor coach transportation, ticket, and

UNBE-LEAF-ABLE TRIP

Kick of the fall season with friends as we travel to the

historic Grandfather Mountain State Park in the heart of the

Blue Ridge Parkway. Tis trip ofers colorful views during

peak leaf season, an animal habitat self-guided tour, lunch,

and a shuttle to the Linville Peak to experience the famous

Mile High Swinging Bridge. On the way home we will enjoy

the colors as travel along the Blue Ridge Parkway to Alta Pass

Orchards, nestled along the side of the mountains, ofering

us another breathtaking view and a chance to grab some

Christmas show in Rose Hill lif you up this holiday season.

Touted as one of the best Christmas shows on the East Coast,

this is a must-see, family-friendly extravaganza full of the

music and favors of Christmas. Sing along to your favorite

Christmas songs, hear charming stories and share lots of

laughs as you tuck into a dinner ft for a festive table. Chef

Bert’s menu highlights seasonal favors, Duplin’s fnest wines

POTTERY WHEEL

Sessions include demonstrations and practice time under

the guidance of the instructor. Students are encouraged to

practice between class sessions. Location: Apex Senior Center

Beginner Wheel

Tis course introduces students to the basics of throwing

pottery and provides them with an understanding of ceramic

terms and processes. During this class we will cover clay

preparation for the wheel, centering, opening and pulling as

well as fnishing techniques like glazing. By the end of the 7

week session students will be able to make basic bowls and

mugs. Tis is a beginner class, no prerequisite.

Intermediate Wheel

Tis course is designed for those who have taken beginner

wheel and want further refnement in basic throwing skills

in order to progress to more challenging levels. We will

review clay preparation for the wheel, centering, opening

and pulling. We will add techniques for shaping and making

multiples. Prerequisite: Beginner Wheel class.

ADVANCED WHEEL

Prerequisite: Tese classes are only available to students that

have taken Intermediate Wheel at the Apex Senior Center.

Independent Study

Tis Advanced course is for those who strive to continue their

growth and experimentation on the potter's wheel and is for

those who have taken up to intermediate wheel. Students

should come in knowing the basics and are comfortable with

the process of throwing and wedging their own clay. During

class students will work independently but will be guided

individually by the instructor to help improve and work on

their own personal ceramic goals.

Wheel Trown Ornaments

Learn how to create a variety of miniature ornaments by

throwing hallow forms of the same hump of clay. We will

cover the best methods for cutting of and trimming our tiny

pieces by using a chuck. Finally, students will glaze and take

home their fnished pieces to keep or gif to others. Tis class

is recommended for those who are comfortable and have had

independent success with throwing on the potter's wheel.

HANDBUILDING

Beginner Handbuilding

Handbuilding courses include methods of forming clay

without the use of a potter's wheel. We will learn techniques

including pinching, coils and slab building. We will also

cover glazing fnishing basics. For this session we will create a

unifed series of ceramic vessels with diferent handbuilding

methods. Classes provide demonstrations and individual

work time with instructor guidance. Students are encouraged

to practice between class sessions during studio hours.

Intermediate Handbuilding

Students will review beginner techniques while adding on

new ways to shape and manipulate these techniques. We

will work to create new fnal products including boxes with

lids and cover new construction techniques, including hard

slab. Students will learn to add fair and professionalism to

their pieces by adding fnishing touches such as feet, handles

and lids. Tis class will help individuals develop and express

their own unique style through clay. Prerequisite: Beginning

Handbuilding class.

Pottery Open Studio hours are held for students 18+

currently enrolled in our pottery classes. Participants

can use this time to work on their pieces and get extra

ENHANCING GLAZE KNOWLEDGE

Enhancing glaze knowledge through experimentation:

During this 4 session class students will learn what to

consider when making test tiles, how to form, glaze, and

document your tiles. Te fnal class will be for sharing your

observations with your peers and documenting everyone's

glaze combinations and application into a resource for you

and your fellow student. Location: Apex Senior Center

Mini Jack-O'-Lanterns

During this class students will learn the basics of

ceramics by making mini pumpkins through the pinch

pot method. Students will then sculpt, carve and texture

their pinch pots to create mini jack-o-lanterns. Students

will then use glaze to fnalize their pieces so they will be

ready to display just in time for spooky season. All levels

of students are welcome! Instructor: Rachel Stewart

Coiled Luminaries

Students will create a clay luminary through the coil

method. Students will be guided through designing

a form in clay and laying out a pattern, and the best

techniques for piercing and removing the clay from the

form to reveal the light of your candle. Tis class will

cover form creation and glazing. Students are encouraged

to come into open studio to work on their piece and

get extra assistance between classes. All levels of ceramic

Stacking Boxes

Students will create a stack of 3 small boxes where each

box becomes the lid for the box below. We will learn

about creating variety while shaping your box set, adding

texture, keys, and fanges. We will fnish our pieces by

focusing on best practices for glazing textured boxes.

Gingerbread Houses

In this class students will use a pattern to make a classic

gingerbread house. Tey will learn the hard slab method

of hand building to create their house structure. Students

will be encouraged to add sculptural elements, slip

decoration and gingerbread people to make their house

one of a kind. Students will then fnalize their house by

adding color with glaze. All levels of ceramic students are

Wear clothes that can get dirty even though there are aprons! (Optional) Bring a shoebox or plastic container for

work storage and/or taking work home, a sketchbook or notebook.

Leaf Impression Bowls

Te weather is changing and the season of leaves has

arrived. Collect your favorite leaf or leaves to keep forever

as a ceramic bowl. Note any leaves you bring will not stay

in the same condition, and leaves can also be provided.

We will emboss your leaf into clay and use the drape mold

technique to encourage a bowl shape. When your bowl

has been fred and is ready to glaze you will be invited to

open studio hours to fnish your bowl with color. When

fnished your bowl will be food and dishwasher safe.

Winter Trees

Join us this winter season in creating a tree to add to

your mantle or decor for years to come. In this class

we will discuss options for making and designing trees

based on beginner handbuilding techniques. We will

cover building your form adding texture and glazing.

Pinch Pot Snowmen

During this class students will learn the basics of

ceramics by making snowmen through the pinch pot

method. Students will create the body of the snowmen

by creating hollow forms. Once assembled students will

make their snowmen come to life by adding various

additive or subtractive textures. Students will then add

color using glaze to fnalize. All levels of ceramic students

are welcome. Instructor: Rachel Stewart

Cookie Cutter Ornaments

Students will explore clay by creating textured ornaments.

Students will roll out fat clay slabs and cut out various

shapes of their choosing using cookie cutters. students

will then texturize on to their cut-out shapes by using

additive and subtractive texture techniques. Students will

fnalize their ornaments by glazing and stringing them

up with a ribbon of their choice. All levels of ceramic

UNIQUELY HANDMADE CARDS

Each class ofers an wide variety of design techniques to

create one-of-a-kind beautiful cards to take home. Each class

has it's own theme and design. No experience necessary.

Students will create and take home two handmade cards.

Registration ends a week prior to class. Supply list: double-

sided adhesive tape runner (with refll), adhesive-backed foam

dots/squares, mini glue dots/zots, small scissors and small

(3 mm) or graduated-sized(clear, black, and multicolored)

adhesive-backed rhinestones.
