ACTION
ACTING FOR
SUSTAINABILITY
Have you ever heard the word "sustainability"? It means taking care of the world around us
so that we can continue to live here happily and healthily for a very long time.
To make sure we're taking care of the world, we need help from important people called
politicians. They make rules and decisions that can help protect the environment and make
sure we're using resources like air, water, and energy in a way that won't hurt the planet.
Politicians can also help teach us about how we can take care of the world, so we can grow
up to be smart and responsible adults who know how to protect our planet.
So, it's important for politicians to work together and with all of us to make sure we have a
healthy and happy planet for many, many years to come!
DEMOCRACY AND THE
CHALLENGE OF CLIMATE
CHANGE
Climate change is a big problem that
afects the whole world. It's really
important that countries work together
to reduce the pollution we make, so we
can have a healthy planet for many years
to come.
Climate change is already afecting how
our governments work, especially when it
comes to food, water, and natural
disasters. It's like a big test to see if they
can work together to solve these
problems.
To make sure we have a safe and healthy
world for everyone, countries need to
come up with good ideas to reduce
pollution and protect the environment.
This will help us now and in the future!
POLITICAL SYSTEMS
AND SUSTAINABILITY
WHO ARE THE RELEVANT POLITICAL
STAKEHOLDERS IN MY COMMUNITY?
It's important to take care of our planet so that we can continue to live on it happily and healthily.
There are people who make important decisions about how we take care of the planet, like using
clean energy and recycling. These people are called "political stakeholders." They work in the
government and other organizations that help take care of the environment. If we want to help
take care of the planet too, we can talk to these people and tell them what we think is important.
We can also vote for people who care about the environment when we're old enough to do so.
TIMELINE: EUROPEAN CLIMATE CHANGE
“Fighting climate change, preserving our environment, acting against global warming… Climate
action has been at the heart of the EU’s mission for decades. Let’s take a look at some milestones.”
When we want to make rules that help our planet, we need
to talk to diferent people who are important and who know
things about how the planet works. These people might be
leaders who make important decisions, people who own
businesses, or people who live in our community. We need to
talk to them and work together to make rules that help our
planet stay healthy and happy. We also need to make sure we
listen to everyone's ideas and try to make rules that are fair
and good for everyone. When we have our rules, we need to
follow them so we can take care of our planet and everything
living on it.
HOW TO ENGAGE AND COLLABORATE
WITH COMMUNITY REPRESENTATIVES.
Sometimes, important people who make decisions in our community, country, or even the world get together
in meetings to talk about how we can help the environment. As a climate activist, you can go to these meetings
to share your ideas and experiences to help make the environment better.
Countries also make rules and plans to help protect the environment, and it's important that kids and young
people like you get to give your opinions too. When you take part in these meetings or consultations, you can
help make sure that these rules and plans are fair and work for everyone, including kids and young people.
Other young activists have some tips on what to do before, during, and after these meetings or consultations,
so you can be prepared and make a diference!

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR CLIMATE ADVOCACY AND ACTION
ON THE FRONTLINES OF
CLIMATE CHANGE IN
ZIMBABWE
UNICEF teamed up with Fridays for Future to highlight
young activists on the front lines of climate change.
“Now is the time to act.” Throughout the COVID-19
pandemic, Nkosi is using his talents to speak out on
climate change in Zimbabwe.
Sometimes people can do things that
hurt the environment, like throwing trash
on the ground or cutting down trees. But
there are rules that say who is responsible
for taking care of the environment and
making sure it stays healthy. It's important
to know these rules so we can make sure
the right people are doing their part to
protect the Earth. Just like when we have
rules in our house, like cleaning up after
ourselves, we need rules for taking care of
the Earth too.
DUE DILIGENCE:
HOLDING CORPORATIONS
ACCOUNTABLE FOR
ENVIRONMENTAL
DAMAGE
Some big companies can help make the
world a better place and protect nature,
but sometimes they can also hurt people
and
the
environment.
People,
governments, and companies are starting
to pay attention to this problem. Some
companies are trying to follow rules that
help them make sure they don't do
anything bad, but some people think that
just following these rules isn't enough.

DOES THE POLLUTER PAY
“WHAT IS THE ‘POLLUTER PAYS’
PRINCIPLE ABOUT?
The "polluter pays" principle means that if someone makes a mess or pollutes the environment, they should be
the ones to clean it up or pay for the damage they caused. This idea helps make sure that people and companies
are responsible for the harm they cause. But sometimes it's hard to fgure out who made the mess or who should
pay for it. In some cases, it can be a big problem to fx the damage, and it may take a long time and be expensive.
Even when we know who did it, it can be hard to make them pay for it. This is especially true when the pollution
comes from many diferent sources, like air pollution.
WHY WE NEED A LAW TO PROTECT WORKERS, PEOPLE,
AND PLANET FROM BAD BUSINESS
Some companies are doing things that are really bad for people and the planet. They might hurt the environment
or treat workers unfairly. The European Union is thinking about making a new law to make sure these companies
are responsible for their actions. This law would require companies to have good policies to protect people's
rights and the environment. But before this can happen, we need to make sure that lots of people ask the
European Commission to change the rules and make sure companies are accountable for what they do.
EVERYONE CAN MAKE A
CONTRIBUTION TO ENVIRONMENTAL
PROTECTION
Taking care of the Earth is like taking care of your own room or toys. We need to make sure we don't make a mess and clean up after
ourselves. We can turn of the lights when we're not using them and save water by not letting it run while we brush our teeth. We
can also recycle and put our trash in the right bin. When we take care of the Earth, we help keep it healthy and beautiful for
everyone to enjoy!

THE
PRECAUTIONARY
PRINCIPLE:
DAMAGING ACTION
MUST BE FOUGHT
PREEMPTIVELY
When people talk about important things like taking care
of the world, they might have diferent opinions and ideas.
Sometimes, they might not be telling the whole truth, or
they might have a special reason for thinking a certain way.
This can make it hard for us to undePreventive action
means taking steps to stop bad things from happening
before they happen.
If we do things that can hurt people or animals or the
environment, we need to think about what might go
wrong and how we can stop it from happening.
For example, if we throw our trash on the ground, it can
make animals sick and hurt the plants. So, we need to put
our trash in the trash can to keep the environment clean
and safe.
Taking preventive action is like being a superhero! We can
use our powers to protect the world and make it a better
place for everyone.
rstand what is really going on and what is the best way to
take care of the world. So it's important for us to be careful
and think about diferent perspectives to make the best
decisions.

THE PRECAUTIONARY
PRINCIPLE
CLIMATE CHANGE
DEBATE ANIMATION
“We should act against climate change because even if
you're a skeptic the risk of it being real is too great to
ignore.”
As an individual, it's important to be responsible
and do things that help make the world a better
place. This means being kind to others and
treating everyone with respect. It also means
taking care of the environment by not littering,
conserving water and energy, and picking up
trash when we see it.
Just like how we take care of ourselves by
brushing our teeth and staying healthy, we need
to take care of the world around us too. When we
do things that are good for the environment and
for
other
people,
we
are
showing
our
commitment towards making the world a better
place for everyone to live in.
EVERY INDIVIDUAL HAS A
COMMITMENT TOWARDS
SOCIETY AS A WHOLE
INDIVIDUAL SOCIAL
RESPONSIBILITY
Even as young people, we can help make a
diference in our communities and the world by
working together to solve problems and make
positive changes. We want to make the world a
better and happier place to live in.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
AND ETHICS
“Social responsibility is an ethical theory in which
individuals are accountable for fulflling their
civic duty, and the actions of an individual must
beneft the whole of society. In this way, there
must be a balance between economic growth
and the welfare of society and the environment.
If this equilibrium is maintained, then social
responsibility is accomplished.”
Enough efort, enough ambition, enough
action just isn't there right now, so we
CHANGE IS
INCREMENTAL BUT
EVERY STEP COUNTS
INACTION IS ALSO
A CHOICE
Everything we do can have an efect on the world around
us, even if we don't notice it right away. For example, if we
throw our trash on the ground instead of in the garbage
can, it might not seem like a big deal to us, but it can hurt
the Earth and the animals that live on it. But if we do little
things like using less plastic or recycling, it can help make
the world a better place for everyone. So, it's important to
always try to do good things for the Earth!
THE COST OF INACTION IS
FAR GREATER THAN THE
COST OF ACTION
continue to see emissions rise, temperatures rise, the
focus then has to shift to adapting to these changing
conditions,” says the Executive Secretary adding that
despite the overwhelming scientifc evidence that
natural disasters are increasing in frequency and
severity due to climate change, “countries still continue
to do the things that they're not supposed to do - this
dependency on fossil fuels; our patterns of production
and consumption are unsustainable.”
STUDENTS AROUND
THE WORLD GO ON
CLIMATE STRIKE
“School and university students in more than 100
countries have gone on strike to demand that
politicians take urgent action on climate change. The
coordinated protests were organised on social media
under the Fridays for Future banner and inspired by
the 16-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, who
is in her 30th week of striking on Fridays.”
