COMPLEXITY

IN

SUSTAINABILITY

Everything we do in life, big or small, has an impact. It can afect the environment we live in, the people and

animals around us, the way we live our lives, and even the money we have.

For example, if you throw litter on the ground, it can make the place look messy and harm animals that live

there. If you share your toys with your friends, it can make them happy and create a nice community. If you

save your allowance, you can buy something special you really want. And if a lot of people in the world start

using cars that pollute the air, it can make the air we breathe unhealthy.

So, everything we do has an impact on our world and the people in it. That's why it's important to think

about how our actions afect others and make choices that are kind to the world and the people around us.

CLIMATE JUSTICE

ACCORDING TO A KID

Climate justice involves discussing the impact of

climate change on individuals, in addition to the

environment, and acknowledging that some

people are afected more severely than others.

The inequitable nature of climate change means

that those who contributed the least to it are

often the ones who sufer the most, while those

who are responsible for most of the damage

may not experience its efects for several years.

POSITIVE,

NEUTRAL AND

NEGATIVE

RESULTS OF

HUMAN ACTION

EVERYTHING WE DO IN LIFE CAN HAVE

DIFFERENT RESULTS.

FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU HELP CLEAN UP THE

PARK, IT CAN MAKE THE PARK A NICER

PLACE FOR EVERYONE TO PLAY IN, AND

THAT'S A GOOD RESULT. IF YOU DON'T DO

ANYTHING AT ALL, IT MIGHT NOT MAKE A BIG

DIFFERENCE, THAT'S A NEUTRAL RESULT.

BUT IF YOU THROW TRASH ON THE GROUND,

IT CAN MAKE THE PARK MESSY AND NOT AS

NICE FOR PEOPLE TO PLAY IN, AND THAT'S A

NEGATIVE RESULT.

OUR ACTIONS CAN HAVE EFFECTS THAT LAST

A LONG TIME AND REACH FAR AWAY PLACES.

SO, IT'S IMPORTANT TO THINK ABOUT WHAT

WE DO AND TRY TO MAKE CHOICES THAT

WILL MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE

FOR EVERYONE, NOW AND IN THE FUTURE.

MAKE THE WORLD A

BETTER PLACE FOR

EVERYONE, NOW AND IN

THE FUTURE.

Imagine you have a toy that you love playing with. You

play with it every day, and it makes you very happy.

But one day, the toy breaks and you can't play with it

anymore. What do you do with it? Do you throw it

away in the trash or do you fnd a way to fx it so you

can play with it again?

This is a good example of life-cycle thinking. Just like

your toy, everything we use has a life cycle, from when

it is made to when it is no longer useful. When we

think about the life cycle of things, we think about the

whole process and try to fnd ways to use them for a

long time and make sure that when we are done with

them, they don't hurt the environment.

By thinking about the life cycle of things, we can make

better choices and be kinder to the environment. So,

next time you get a new toy, think about how you can

take care of it so it can be used by others in the future,

or how it can be recycled into something new when

you are done playing with it.

LIFE CYCLE THINKING AND ITS RELEVANCE FOR SUSTAINABLE

PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION.

This Introduction to Life Cycle Thinking course consists of four modules: Introduction; Drive Change in Public

Policies; Drive Change in Business; Drive Change in Sustainable Lifestyles. The course has videos, lecture

material, quizzes to test learning, and additional materials and examples of LCT in practice.

INTRO TO LIFE CYCLE THINKING

The United Nations has a plan to make the world

a better place, and they came up with 17 big

goals to help us do that.

One goal is to make sure everyone has enough

food to eat (Goal 2), and another goal is to help

people who don't have enough money (Goal 1).

These two goals ft together, because if people

have enough money, they can buy food to eat.

Another goal is to take care of the environment

(Goal 12), and to make sure we have clean water

and air (Goal 6 and Goal 13). These goals ft

together, because if we take care of the

environment, we can have clean water and air.

UNITED NATIONS SDGS AND IS

AWARE OF INTERCONNECTIONS

Sometimes, trying to solve one puzzle can make

it harder to solve another puzzle. For example, if

we want to grow more food to feed people (Goal

2), we might need to cut down some trees (Goal

15). This can make it harder to take care of the

environment (Goal 12). So, we need to be careful

and make sure we're solving all the puzzles in a

way that helps everyone.

In conclusion, the United Nations has 17 big

goals to help make the world a better place, and

each one fts together with the others like pieces

of a puzzle. But we need to be careful and think

about how each goal fts together, so we can

make the world a better place for everyone.

Imagine that you have a toy city made up of buildings, roads, and people. The buildings, roads, and people

are like the parts that make up a big city. Just like the toy city, our world is also made up of diferent parts

that work together. These parts are connected and can afect each other in good or bad ways.

When the toy people are happy, it can make the toy city a better place to live. And when the toy city is doing

well, it can make the toy people even happier. This is like a chain reaction, where one thing can lead to

another and make things better or worse.

This is what we mean by "complex systems". We need to understand how the parts of our world are

connected so we can make it a better and more sustainable place for everyone to live.

SYSTEMS THINKING

COMPLEX SYSTEMS

WE NEED TO

UNDERSTAND HOW THE

PARTS OF OUR WORLD

ARE CONNECTED SO WE

CAN MAKE IT A BETTER

AND MORE SUSTAINABLE

PLACE FOR EVERYONE TO

LIVE

SUSTAINABILITY AS A HOLISTIC CONCEPT THAT

INCLUDES ENVIRONMENTAL, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, AND

CULTURAL ISSUES

Sustainability is like building a big puzzle, but instead of using toy pieces, we're using the world we live in and all the things in it.

The puzzle has four diferent parts: the environment, the money people use, the way people live and the things they do, and the

special things that make each culture unique.

Cascade efects are like a chain reaction, where one thing leads to another and another, and so on.

When humans do something that afects the environment, it can cause a chain of events that leads

to unexpected and sometimes negative consequences.

For example, if we build a dam to control the fow of a river, it might seem like a good idea at frst.

But it can also change the water fow and temperature, which can harm the plants and animals

that live in and near the river. And that change in the river can then afect the people who depend

on it for food and water.

So, even though we might have good intentions when we take actions, sometimes the results can

be hard to predict and can have unintended consequences. That's why it's important to think

carefully about the potential efects of our actions, and try to make choices that will have positive

impacts on both people and the environment.

IS CONCERNED ABOUT UNPREDICTABLE CASCADE

EFFECTS OF HUMAN ACTION

The environment is the air, water, land, and all the

plants and animals that live on it. We want to take care

of the environment, so it stays healthy and clean for us

and for all the creatures that live there.

The money people use is important for buying things

we need, like food and clothes. We want to make sure

that people have enough money, and that we're not

spending it in ways that hurt the environment or other

people.

The way people live and the things they do is about

making sure everyone is happy and healthy. This

includes things like having enough food to eat, a safe

place to live, and good friends and family.

The special things that make each culture unique are

the things that make us who we are, like the songs we

sing, the stories we tell, and the things we make. We

want to keep these special things for us and for future

generations, so that we remember where we come

from and what makes us special.

ROOTS CAUSES OF

UNSUSTAINABILITY

The things that people do are causing problems for the

planet. For example, we use a lot of energy from things

like coal, oil, and gas which makes the air dirty and the

planet is getting warmer. We also cut down too many

trees, which makes it harder for the planet to breathe,

and we use too much stuf and make too much waste.

We also drive cars that use a lot of gas, which also

makes the air dirty. And when we grow food, we

sometimes use things that are bad for the soil and the

water.

All these things are making the planet sick, and we

need to be more careful and do things diferently so

that the planet can be healthy again.

CRITICAL THINKING

DIFFERENT UNDERSTANDINGS

OF SUSTAINABILITY AND BIASES

CAN INFLUENCE THE DISCOURSE

ON SUSTAINABILITY.

When people talk about important things like taking care

of the world, they might have diferent opinions and ideas.

Sometimes, they might not be telling the whole truth, or

they might have a special reason for thinking a certain way.

This can make it hard for us to understand what is really

going on and what is the best way to take care of the world.

So it's important for us to be careful and think about

diferent perspectives to make the best decisions.

Greenwashing is when companies or organizations make false or misleading claims about how environmentally

friendly their products, services, or policies are. They do this to make people believe they are doing something good

for the environment, when in fact they are not. For example, a company might claim their products are "eco-friendly" or

"carbon neutral" when they are not actually reducing their impact on the environment. Greenwashing is a form of false

advertising, and it can be misleading for consumers who want to make responsible choices for the environment. It's

important to be critical and ask questions to understand the true impact of products and practices on the environment.

KNOWS SUSTAINABILITY CLAIMS WITHOUT ROBUST EVIDENCE

ARE OFTEN MERE COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES, ALSO KNOWN

AS GREENWASHING.

Think about a story that you love, like "The Three

Little Pigs". In that story, there is a problem that

the pigs have to solve, which is that the big bad

wolf is trying to blow down their houses.

Now, imagine that there are many diferent stories

about how to solve this problem. Some stories

might say that the pigs should build their houses out

of straw or sticks, which won't be strong enough to

stop the wolf. Other stories might say that the pigs

should build their houses out of bricks, which will be

strong enough to stop the wolf.

PREDOMINANT

NARRATIVES CAN SHAPE

THE FORMULATION OF

SUSTAINABILITY

PROBLEMS.

it's important to listen to

diferent stories and make

up our own minds about

what is the best way to

make the world a better

place!

Just like these stories, there are many diferent ideas

about how to solve big problems in the world, like making

sure everyone has enough food and clean water, or

making sure that the world is a healthy place for all

animals and plants. Some of these ideas might not be very

good, while others might be better.

The stories that people hear and believe the most are

called "predominant narratives". Just like in the story of

the Three Little Pigs, these stories can shape how people

think about problems and what they believe is the best

way to solve them. So it's important to listen to diferent

stories and make up our own minds about what is the

best way to make the world a better place!
