revamping author: Kacper Gronkiewicz
original design: Michael Thonet
Kacper Gronkiewicz is an architect and
interior designer, nominated twice to
German Design Award for his luxurious
restaurant designs. He is also an ex-
Dominican monk with a sense of humour.
When we asked him to participate in
the Alter Ego project, he enthusiastically
agreed and chose one of the lushest
period chairs from the Thonet collection,
B-1870, and turned it into a true fetish.
As Kacper explains, he was inspired by the
ecclesiastical fashion show from Federico
Fellini’s “Roma”, Baroque church interiors
and the gloom of Vienna streets from “The
Third Man” by Orson Welles.
